These gais are all about providing wide open spaces for your pets
so they are gonna call just about everything overstocked
if you are trying to farm big fat cichlids just up the feeding and WC schedules

How many cixhlids would you recommend in this size aquarium to get them big and fat?

Maybe I missed it but I have yet to see statistical data to substantiate a claim that growth would be inhibited by tank size.
8 cichlids in a 125? Not too bad if you plan to upgrade in the future.
If you want fatter, or more well fed fish, feed more and stay ontop of you water changed testing for nitrate 3x week.
Good luck

I don't think you are way overstocked, just a little. 4 -6 of those fish would be the safe. As long as you are keeping up with water changes, there shouldn't be any stunting of growth.

The thought out there is that fish release a hormone that helps keep populations in check. If too many fish are in a body of water the hormone will build up and stunt their growth until populations decrease and/or the hormone dissipates. Water changes would keep the hormone concentration down so growth shouldn't be slowed at all.

You can see evidence of this by people that keep Oscars in a 10g for a year or more, rarely doing water changes, and they are still only 2 or 3 inches long.

The cereal is what I am speaking of. The natural non-sugar type of corn flakes. The white kind. Is what I heard. This post has got out of hand but very funny! Thanks for the responses:)

To the OP:

Sometimes fat is just fat. Thats not to say its a good thing. If this were a practice embraced by the Cichlid keeping community, or a few prominent Cichlid keepers than I would be all for it. Until I see some reputable people recommending this I would be very wary. Not a lot of corn to be found in the rivers of south and central America and the fish have done very well without it.
Oh, and about the Nebraska "corn fed" thing, I'm no expert but I always thought that figure of speech had more to do with the mass raising of cattle and pigs and our feeding them the cheapest, most readily abundant food source we have here in the US.
That being of course, corn.

For the original question, i don't think it would really make a difference either way. Probably not good to feed them corn flakes exclusively, but they could likely survive ok on it.

It will lower their cholesterol.

If ya want your fish to bulk up, feed them a variety of foods 2 or 3 times per day, let them get full, and make sure you are doing 20-30% water changes at least 3 times per week to keep up with the added bio load. Skipping 1 day of feeding per week should keep them from getting fat and keep their systems shocked enough for the the extra feeding the rest of the week to keep them bulking up.

Give em froot loops and see if they turn into a toucan.

wait do we want them fat or not want them fat
wat was this for

Just to clarify before anyone misunderstands me, I am not saying that a thick Cichlid is an unhealthy Cichlid. Just suggesting that some foods might contribute to the size of a fish, while ultimately harming long term health.
Companies like NLS and Hikari could make a hell of a lot of money by just repackaging corn and selling it to aquarists as "bulk adding" or some other marketing gimmick, but they don't.
