Corn Flakes to Fatten up Cichlids????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
cereal??? really???? we are talking about fish here right???? Wtf??? somebody is smoking some good stuff!! I guess they plan on eating their fish??????
Chocolate Gourami's yummmm!

I know a guy who feeds cheerios to his koi every fall to fatten them up for winter and it works but I still think he's nuts.

At least koi can assimilate larger amounts of carbs than most species of fish.

Corn flakes are a poor choice of food, fish require very little carbs in their diet & the goal should always be to limit the overall carb content, not increase it. When excessive carbs are used in manufactured food the reason is to spare the more expensive protein from being used as an energy source. Some manufacturers simply get carried away because these types of ingredients are cheap.

Companies like NLS and Hikari could make a hell of a lot of money by just repackaging corn and selling it to aquarists as "bulk adding" or some other marketing gimmick, but they don't.

Hikari already does make a hell of a lot of money selling fish food that contains corn flakes. And this in a food that is supposedly designed specifically for carnivorous species of fish.

Dang. I only feed NLS and know the ingredients they use. Dont use any Hikari products (been meaning to try actually) but figured they would stay away from Corn.
Based that assumption on nothing though...
Any-who.
Corn is an odd choice for SA/SA Cichlids. I think most of us would agree on this.
Thanks,

Matt

If your fish don't like corn, you can always feed them day old donuts, with a little MSG to help them choke it back?

BTW - excessive use of starch/carbs will help "fatten" a fish up, as any carbohydrate that isn't used immediately as an energy source, will eventually get converted to fat. No different than if you or I washed each meal down with a loaf of white bread. Eventually we'd become obese. Those types of gains in growth are not something that any fish keeper should be striving for.

I don't recall meeting anyone who wanted to "fatten up" their dog.
Fish should be regarded as any other pet, unfortunately they are not.

I have seen some women that could use a few pounds here or there........
Yeah any of the so called "models" out there. Some have the figures of 10 year olds. I like some meat on my women.
