Counseling for the obsessed...

Pothos is no longer allowed in my tanks, same with lucky bamboo. I had such bad experience with them. They didn't do anything. I think people who say these plants worked must have had a ton of them in their tanks. Mine just rotted away or fish will chew on it.

Here's a sure fire way to remove nitrates without plants.
drain out water (I do it halfway)
then fill back up
then drain again half of what you drained before
then fill back
do it again the following week

I don't know how well they keep nitrates down but they grow like weeds if they have proper lighting.

As for the second part that's a little pointless.
Say you have 100ppm nitrates for simplicity
You do a 50% water change you now have 50ppm
Do another 50% water change with your 50ppm nitrates and you now have 25ppm

Take that same 100ppm nitrates
Do a 75% water change you now have 25ppm nitrates with less water and time consumed
Do a 90% water change and you now have 10ppm with still less water and time consumed.

Wow, no wonder ya all thing multiple tanks is so much work....
I dont have to do anywhere near that level of water changes to keep my parameters right. But then again i have all my tanks pretty massivly over filtered and not too terribly heavey on the stock.

The 100ppm was just a hypothetical number to make the math easy.

So I have a dedicated fish room for all tanks that are unfinished(no substrate etc.) that is wear the majority of my stock will reside but I hope to slowly expand with some grand display tanks popping up around the house. I already have almost 1,000 gallons of aquarium running and another 600 to setup before the fish room is decked out. I'm afraid! Then I have 4 display tanks planned that will total 2,000 gallons and 2 little displays in my room... Oh it never ends!

Well when u walk into my house theres a 29g to ur immediate left then directly to ur right theres a 125g the 2 ft to ur left after that tank is the dinning room table which is usrrounded by two 55 making L shape. thats just my living room :) im actually just waiting for a stand to pop up another 29. and our room is filled with tanks too! Obssessed no. i could live without em too. but i never seem to find space for all the fish i want to keep. and get new ideas for tanks everyday.

I feel so much better hearing I'm on the light side on quantity! This has turned out to be an awesome thread - oh and keep of coming. More counseling needed!

At one point I had 2 55's a 75, a 220 a 36 bow and a 20g long and I thought I was crazy.then I discovered this site and now I sleep so much better a night.doesn't help the wife though...

Been in this hobby for only a year and a half. Already have a 15, 55, 120 and a 280. Currently working on resealing and building a stand for a 220. If this small island is not located in a typhoon alley, I would have tanks setup in the yard already, or better yet a pond.
