Curious about Texas...

I have managed to trace down one person here who has the Green Texas.

My question to all is this... is it worth getting the green texas or should I hold out and find a "true" texas?

Thats really up to you. Everyone will have a different opinion on that. Get what you like (within reason), regardless of what someone suggests.

the true texas is worthless and commonly seen in petstores. the green texas is very rare and uncommon in petstores. it is also much prettier comparing to true texas and tolerates colder water.

its the other way around the cyanoguttatum can tolerate colder water. its used to the texas winter. the carpintis is not used to cold winters because they live further south into mexico.

to me they both look nice. specially around breeding time. the carpintis is more attractive because the spots are bigger and most of the time cover the face.

True Texas arent worthless, especially in the Netherlands & Europe. They arent very common and I see more Escondidos in LFS than I do Texas. Actually, Ive never seen a common Texas in a LFS come to think of it. They are cool fish, lots of personality, borderline super aggressive & look VERY COOL in breeding dress.

I have seen 3 different variants of Herichthys Carpintis:

escondido - more turquoise in color, wormish looking marks around the mouth (like a green terror kind of)

Escondido%20NEF%20203b.jpg

chariel - big roundish close together spots, more gold in color than the other 2

chairel.jpg

lahillas more blue and black, smaller spots spread apart more, lower profiled than the other 2 variants

lahillas.jpg

The easiest way to tell the difference is the spots are different sized and the markings around the eyes and mouth are different, mainly with the carpintis and all 3 carpintis are locale differences and specific to their gathering locations (all of which are within 200 miles of each other I believe).

its the opposite up here plenty of cyano's and not many carpintes, i think they are both good looking species but i prefer the carpintes especially the escondido

I own both a Texas and a Green Texas (I can't say for sure which of the three above it is, but it does have thin lines around the mouth, so I guess its an escondido - it was sold at the local mom and pop lfs as a Green Texas). I like them both equally. Their shape is almost identical, but the coloring and spots are very different.

I bought the Texas first. It was one of my first cichlids two years ago after having owned convict and peacock pairs years earlier. I didn't want the Texas really, but he basically came free with the Dempsey and Green Terror I bought. The JD is still kicking, but my original GT passed away. Anyway, my Texas has grown on me both in actual size and my appreciation for it. I later bought the carpinti after having seen pictures online and seeing one show up at my local lfs.

Long story short, I'd take the first one you can find. I don't think you'll be disappointed. If I get my camera charged up tomorrow, I'll post some pics of mine.

Thanks everyone above for all your posts and photos... this is all really great!!

I have placed an order today for

Herichthys cyanoguttatus

I just love the way they look. So much so that I am probably going to move around quite a few fish to be able to give them the space they need.

As far as I know here in Holland at least, they are quite rare to find. I cannot find them anywhere. The guy at the LFS is going to order them from a different country.
