Curious about Texas...

Wow, the more I see these guys the more excited I am to get them :)

Really, such stunning Texas' you all have.

just to clarify...

There is only ONE True Texas Ciclid which is Herichthys Cyanoguttatus.

Red Texas Cichlids are hybrid fish and are considered a type of Flowerhorn created by cross breeding various species from South America for color.

The Carpintis is mistakingly referred to as a Texas Cichlid, although it isnt.

Been reading around on the agression level of a Texas, now I've read that they are quite agressive territorial cichlids. But I wondered in all of your exeriences how agressive are they actually?

Well Ive had a Carpintis 'Chariel' & a breeding pair of the Carpintis 'Lahillas' and Id say the aggression is about average for a Central American cichlid. The pair I had had to be seperated and I eventually got rid of the male because he just stalked the female and kept her up in the top of the tank in fear.

The female currently rules my 265 and isnt the biggest fish in it. Shes about 8" with the trimac and festae being 9+. No stalking, violence or even nipped fins, shes just the one everyone swims away from when she goes swimming around. SHe isnt afraid to lay the smackdown if they dont move out of her way.

Now, all that being said, I dont know if the Carpintis aggression is the same as a Cyanoguttatus, but I think its very similar. If I could get a large one I would, but as I stated prior, I cant get them around here in stores, and Im not in a situation that I can order a 2 incher and put it in my tank. It wont last 30 seconds if I do.

My Texas is with severums and he is obviously the most dominant fish but not overly aggressive towards them. I try to reintroduce my female red terror and he tries to kill it. Devolpment of tank heirarchy is important and it is best to get a juvenile and have it grow up with tankmates. I have had him since November(2.5") now he is over 8" and a very striking fish. Thought he was cyano but now am leaning toward carpintes, which is not really a Texas. Maybe they should call it a Mexican.

Interesting!

I wonder who will be the tank leader when I get them. I am not sure if I should just get one male or get a pair...

By the time it will here he'll be living probably with 1 (maybe 2) oscars, 1 JD pair, and 2 cons. And they'll be in my 120g.
