thats all relative to your location...carpintis are very common near me and go for just a few bucks

Ok, well I guess its subjective, because Im getting the picture you think the Escondido is better looking and therefore should cost more. Escondidos are for sale everywhere online and at most LFS, so Id say theyd be less expensive than a harder to find fish.

None of that matters though, get what YOU LIKE and pay what you can or want for it. I only posted on this topic again to clear up the confusion on the names people use for a carpintis and mistakingly calling it a green texas/blue texas/etc...

Yeah I would never refer to a carp as a texas.....lol I am with you on that.
:D

I have had zero luck finding a escon other than online. So I guess my opinion is formed due to how hard it is to obtain them locally here. Ken's Fish Farm is prob the closest to get them for me.

I snagged my reg carp from a LFS, and only because it was sold to it by one of the employees, while I was in there browsing. hehe

Most LFS just carry normal texans. Least where I am.
:(

Ok...well what are you calling a regular carpintis? Carpintis are differentiated by their region of collection, so which one of the 3 is it that youre calling "regular"... Escondido, Chariel or Lahillas?

In Charlotte, you have access to True Texas (cyanoguttatus)? Are there any shops with 6+ inchers? and how much do they go for around there? I cant find any here on the coast.

ive always wondered this too...never knew which variant of carpintis are the common ones i see at LFS. escondido is easy to tell apart but not the others

I guess I am referring to a reg carp as a pearlscale.

The fish in my pic is one of those. I paid 15 bucks @ 4 inch (give or take)

Next time I am at the LFS I will look for a TT for you and run some prices.

Ok, well pearlscale is just another "nickname" for carpintis. Which of these 3 does it look like? If it doesnt look like any of the 3, theres a chance its a hybrid of them or a texas/carpintis hybrid. If thats it in your avatar, Id say it has some true texas in it judging from how small the spots are on it, but its hard to say for sure with a small pic.

3 different variants of Herichthys Carpintis:

escondido - more turquoise in color, wormish looking marks around the mouth (like a green terror kind of)

chariel - big roundish close together spots, more gold in color than the other 2

lahillas more blue and black, smaller spots spread apart more, lower profiled than the other 2 variants

The easiest way to tell the difference is the spots are different sized and the markings around the eyes and mouth are different, mainly with the carpintis and all 3 carpintis are locale differences and specific to their gathering locations (all of which are within 200 miles of each other I believe).

Yeah but if I sold them at a LFS I sure as hell would not label/price them the same....that was my reference in the thread.

Damn scientific junkies...lol

Pearscale is the 'Cichlasoma' variant? Prob the most common/cheapest?

But if it's not a "true" carp (one of those 3 you listed), then oh well. No need to derail this thread more than we already have.
lol
