Curious about Texas...

None of this is derailing...its a thread started requesting info about Texas/Carpintis. Were contributing by clearing up/ giving info, so its all good.

pearlscale is just another "given" name, like green texas/blue texas etc. Its been moved to Herichthys and is no longer classified as cichlasoma (I believe).

Gotcha. Of those 3 pics it looks most similar to the lahillas. But at 4" it's somewhat difficult to tell. The only person that really knows is the guy that sold it to the store. He is actually on these boards. :D

If I had to put money on it, guessing at what I paid, it's a carp/texas hybrid (more carp than tex). Labled/sold as a "pearlscale" (that is what the seller/LFS tanked it as).

Yeah @ 14 bucks I thought it was a steal. My best fish (personality wise) as well.

I have been fascinated with carps (escons in particular) since I got into this hobby. Heck youtube videos of escons had a HUGE influence on me going freshwater. They are just spectacular fish to look at...
:D

I wish I had the xtra tank and money to find 2, and breed them. Would be a lot of fun.

I think I read somewhere on these boards that the OP had 2 EBJDs (edit - maybe I am getting her mixed up with someone else). So I figured instead of getting common texans she could try her luck with some carps instead. The escons being the most turquoise/blue correct?

I think she is wanting a True Texas but ordered some escondidos.

They are definitely the most turquoise...I think the most blue is the Carpintis 'Lahillas'.

Heres mine and shes pretty blue (although it doesnt look it from my lackluster photography skills...shes more royal blue & black than anything):

op here :)

Big Country and VRWC, thanks for all your input - I didn't find it derailing in the slightest.

Big Country - You were sorta right, I have a JD pair, but they are just regular JD's that always seem to be in breeding dress. Beautiful fish, but they are extremely shy and are always hiding.

VRWC - I did want the true tex (still do) but after calling a million shops and cichlid handlers here I have had no warm lead. Most people said they haven't seen them in a long time. The closest that they do stock (rarely) is the Carpintes, but I am not sure which variant (my lack of the language here makes it a challenge at times).

So, I have found a carpintes - from the vague description they gave me over the phone I am guessing its a Escondido. But, I haven't seen it so I have no idea. It'll be an interesting mystery.

Slightly disapointed, simply because I had my heart set on getting a True Tex. But, that is not to say I find the Escon any less beautiful. Pick up will be in about three weeks as I'm off on holiday for the next two weeks and then a few other things come up when I'm back.

Apparently the reason for them being so are out here (Holland) is because of lack of interest really. Most people are more into the malawian/African cichlids. Big tanks here don't seem that common and I think people want the colour and ability to stock more rather than chunky big ca/sa fish.

My carpintis is currently in breeding dress. So pretty!
