I like what you did on the green side of things. Heres the problem with not drianing your tank.... Styrofoam floats, even with a nice coat of drylok. So you would have no way to adhear it to the glass with water in the tank.

Is the left side of the tank viewable? If it is, it could pose some problems, as you'll be able to see the backside of the styrofoam. You could use the silicone and just glue it to the back and to the bottom.

Also, styrofoam tends to be brittle, so try not to design any elements that are too thin, or they will break. I would say its safe to work it down to 3/4", anything thinner than that will become VERY frustrating.

I started out with a very similar idea, and ended up making individual rock piles.

The hardest part is getting everything glued up and fitting together properly.

I'd you start by gluing two pieces of foam together to make the corner, texturizing it, and working off that piece. make pencil holes, and use a short pieces of wooden dowell and silicone everything to be sure of a strong bond.

After you've got the base made and shaped, get to work on the different levels using th same method to attach them.

Once you've got it all assembled, you can drylok it, then install it.

If you make the bottom level below the substrate, you can actually silicone some plants into it as well.

What you are looking at doing would look great in your tank if you can pull it off. The questions to ask yourself, is it worth the work? I'm really happy i did what I did in my tank, and it looks great.

There is a lot you can do, and it's really not as terrifying as it may seem.

It certainly can be done, and it's not nearly as difficult as I think you percieve it to be.

You are already taking a great first step and formulating a good plan.
