Great idea! plus get lots of laughs when your friends stop by to check out the new pond and you "forget" to turn the sensor off. :grinno:

Quick question would there happen to be a window over the pond? As far as the ICK birds can transport protozoan in their stool (not certain about ick specifcally) and when they die most critters crap themselves.

sometimes young birds just from the nest {if you have alot of nests around } make an error in judgement when they are beginning to fly... and end up flying into the pond.. this should cease when bird breeding is over... or if it is extremely dry there and birds are attracted to the pond due to thirst... in which case maybe you can put a bird bath out but some distance away for them to drink.. the ick has nothing to do with the birds unless you failed to retrieve the decaying body...and then some bacteria grew and looks like ick... i hope not..

sounds like a good idea

a bird net is the best idea. since you have birds present, its only a matter if time before the birds start catching fish

there is a thick tree nearby with alot of birds.... but the wall is in the way, and the birds i find dead are pretty big, so being beginner flyers i dont know...

wats funny most of my fish in my ponds are pretty big, roughly the smallest being 5"-6", biggest around 8"... comets and koi...

i should get a big catfish to chomp down on birds... JK :D

All great suggestions for bird deterrent methods, but I vote big catfish, fake owl & a rock/driftwood escape boat for the birds.
If the birds is in the water for more than a few hours (while you're at work), I would expect a hefty ammonia spike with all the bacteria in the water. They will begin to decompose the bird very quickly. The birds could have started the problem & these spikes could be contributing to your ammonia/Ick issue. Bird crap is nasty, too. No telling whats in there!
