Decisions, Decisions. Polys in a planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’ve found that my polypterus don’t mind my high light, they just tend to be swimming in and around the plants more.

That said my Palmas is my most active followed by my del, my retro is a little more outgoing than my moke but I’ve also had it longer so (Shrug). I don’t have issues with mine uprooting my plants unless they just do a sudden jerking movements and then they may uproot maybe a stem or two that has been freshly planted but other than that no issues.

Ropes are fine as well, going to try a teg in my tank but I know it eventually might be too large and girthy but I think by then I’ll have another home for the fish.

My polys never uprooted my plants, either, but my tank was very established when they went in there - had other fish in there prior.

I agree, 6 ropes, 4 polys and 8-10 congos would be a good start. You can see how they do as they grow and what the water quality does. Plants help. You might also consider adding a Ctenopoma and/or 2-3 African Butterfly fish. The butterflies are not active, but I think they're super cool looking and fascinating to watch hang out and eat. They love surface plants.

My WC Del was very placid ( twentyleagues twentyleagues has her now, so maybe things have changed now that she's larger) and she wasn't a fish eater / killer, so it just depends on the individual fish sometimes. I'd go for it, and if you start losing Congos, you can find something else. Larger ones to start would be helpful. Mine were pretty big from WS.

Edit: Weekly WC of 20%... any reason you would be opposed to doing weekly 50%?

No, she's still a gentle giant. Although she hits the surface hard to catch a breath. My two CB males are probably the fish eaters it's just my guess. I dont know if these "dithers" died and were eaten or were just eaten. I don't know why'd they'd have died without being eaten but I guess its possible.

Toyin is on Facebook, search Rehoboth Aquatics, USA and message him there. I think he is still importing a bunch of cool African fish so he should still have a good bichir selection.
