decorate this tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
okay. That is good to know. Black is my favorite, so we will see. I was kinda wanting to go lighter with this tank though. After seeing magpie magpie 's tank I want to do live plants. :D The driftwood was screwed into two pieces of slate to anchor it down.

What about with gold? The other option is that sunset gold Super Naturals sand. I don't know if that would look tacky though. Would gold also wash them out like the white?
I havent tried gold, but i think natural color like J jaws7777 and DMD123 DMD123 looks nice. Before im thinking of substrate like a light brown almost like a mocha color sand, but cant find it in my lfs.

Here is my video when i had black sand.

If i were you i would go. Are bottom now, your gravel are big and the poly might endup eating a pebble and choke from it, since you going to change substrate anyway. Just my opinion.

Problem with many of the sands out there is that it is too fine and easily gets stirred up and sucked into filters. This is the main reason I use peace river. It is more like a fine gravel than sand. With mine I also mixed in a little black, this stuff:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005TNF74W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The African Cichlid Substrate is also a bit larger grain like the peace river. My ratio is 20lbs black to about 135 pounds of peace river. This gives the peace river just that little missing element, though Im tempted to add one more 20lb bag of black.

Your tank is beautiful. That and your recommendation is why I have been considering Peace River. Plus Porkchop and Weeksii add to it. haha. Do you think I could do live plants with the larger grain? Wow, I would have never even noticed that black sand was in there. Do you put it as the base layer? Thanks for the tip of mixing them.

Thank you, I work hard on the tank despicably since its the main focus in the living room and I have to have the wife's approval.

I sprinkled the black all over the peace river and then did a gravel vac to mix it in. I had to di it this way sine the tank was already established and I could not pull out the substrate to mix it.

I have not done live plants but I dont see why it would not work

You can do some rooted plants in sand. Just do a deep enough bed so the roots van take hold. I did amazon swords in a sand substrate and placed root seachem root tabs near the roots.

Pfs is heavy enough tp not get stirred up. I was on the hunt for brown sand as well and the best i was able to find was red flint sand. Its what im using now. The lighting kid of makes it look lighter than it really is. Its a mix of browns and maroons.

cloudy tank.jpg

added some sand and rocks. Mixed black and white sand. Still very cloudy. and dark. Slowly getting there....need to buy another light for it.. Trying to get everything ready for my ornate after he's done with his treatment :] Need to make a heater guard out of PVC, cause I do not want to deal with more burns again.

Nice! Looking better and better! The sand dust will clear soon.

Are you going with live plants or no?
