I was going to say this as well yesterday but decided to stay out of it. This is the exact reason why the DIY fitting will work.

Could you get it to seal? possibly, but then there would be much stress on the bucket wall that it could crack in a very short amount of time.

Oreo, what "BAD" advice was given? Lets see you give GOOD advice, the experts here with experience will compaire.
Jgray152,
Thank You!!

can i ask why you have gone for a canister over using the bucket as a sump ,safer, easier, cheaper and a higher oxygen environment so offers better filtration so why a can ?

Sumps have bypass. Canisters don't. There is still plenty of oxygen in the water for bacteria to do their job so why bring this up?

just asking how does this have less bypass compared with a sump stacked with the same media ?

Ummm I think someone needs to stop making answers up...

do some research and be a productive member by offering actual advice and truthful info...

ill take a canister over a sump any day. A sealed compartment lets me sleep at night

if a sump starts to clog, say you are away for a while, where is the water going to go if the total flow can't go through the pad? Say you are using micron filtration pads... Am I making **** up now?

What else am I making up? Cause I know you don't think I am pulling answers out of my ass when I say there is still plenty of oxygen in the water for bio filtration when using canister filters.

I have. Where have you been?

If you are concerned about that then you clean or replace the filter pad before your away time...

Sure there is but there is a lot more in a wet/dry and the wet/dry actually adds more air into the water. Also a properly setup W/D can out-preform any canister hands down for Biological filtration.

When you compare a home made canister to a home made wet/dry I will take the wet/dry no contest. Since the canister is just a plastic bucket, it might not happen right away but eventually the bucket will fracture from all the pressure over time... you wont get that with a homemade wet/dry because the only pressure is the displacement from the water in the sump...

I decided on a canister because then I could avoid drilling or having a DIY overflow fail. I also have never seen anyone else try it so I wanted to. I did work and had mega flow. However I would like to find a more study container for the rebuild. The bucket held but the lid deformed alot which scares me a bit.

In all honesty I would prefer a Wet/dry but I wanted to try something new and not have to have it drilled.
