I tested my version earlier today. I ran into one small leak but other than that it worked perfectly. I didnt even use a valve to purge just waited to put the lid on until it was almost full (may add the valve later anyway). the weak point that both you and I knew about. It was where I took a short cut to make the pieces I had work for the outlet. Im going to try to pick up a threaded piece I can use to sandwich it to create a better seal.
 
Thats a good idea. Im not 100% sure it would work either but I get the physics you are describing. I may have to give that a try. Or even extend the tubing through the bucket until it is under the pump. The water rushing by might cause more draw.

I meant have the tubing on the inside of the bucket extending from the top to the bottom. So the tubing shouldn't have to go "through" the bucket.

What if you try something like this?

The rubber gasket is called a "pop up washer". Two orings may also work. The slip connector on the right side of the washer is a male threaded electrical conduit fitting. It was all I could find that was not tapered.

Thats a great idea. That was my main problem with making a tight fit. The pipe threads dont allow you to tighten completely. Ill have to check that out tomarrow after work
 
Schd. 80 PVC electric conduit fittings and 0-rings will work.
Also if you boil them till they get just soft enough to let you imbed a fingernail in the plastic, teflon the threads and crank them tight with the o-rings in place you'll have no leaks ...:headbang2

Ok I was thinking. If your worried about the bioload not being enough, couldn't you in theory use another bucket inline with that one? the drawing below will explain better I think. But have the one bucket output into another bucket full of biomedia. the pressure from the first bucket filling the second I think would be sufficient to make the water continue on to the tank.

Its not that simple but yes you can. Although your sump is hooked up backwards.
 
ok so although i tested the pump and it worked fairly well with the new oring sealed parts I installed....this project is over for now.

Unfortunately my new 110 decided to empty itself today so in a panic I ripped apart the filter to use the sump pump to try to clean up the pool of water in the room. :cry:

it was actually very lucky I had it or I would have a lot of drywall to replace.

I can put the filter back together but the tank is majorly F%$#ed Up! So there is no reason to until I can fix the 110.
