It was going to help break up any bubbles before the water got to the pumps, but if you look at the pictures where it is running, you can see we decided to remove it.

They are VERY easy to make. Now that I finally got over the hump of making the first one, I feel much more comfortable doing another. I don't know why I didn't do one of these a couple of years ago.

amazing DIY.

Thanks. :D

I'm glad that worked out so well. It makes it easy when you already have the template:)

A close up shot of the unions that are dumping water into the sump. We used unions so that we would be able to keep the feed height low and yet still be able to pull the filter sock out, if needed.

What do you mean by keeping the "feed height low"? Along the same lines, how does this affect the ability to pull out the filter sock?

The unions helped get the pvc inside the sock, below the water line, so there wouldn't be any noise from the water coming from the tank. If we just used pvc, it would be impossible (at least very hard) to get the sock out of the sump for cleaning. By using the unions, I am able to disconnect the pipe above the sock, to allow for easy access.

Alright, thanks for that clear up. All of these posts are really helping me figure out exactly how to build my sump for my next tank. One last question I have about these setups is the overall noise. I've seen some people say that they wouldn't use these in certain areas of their house. I live in a loft, so you can hear my current setup with two emperor 400's everywhere in my house. Will a w/d sump be about the same loudness, more, or less?

I am really impressed with how quiet the whole setup runs. I can faintly hear the sump from the other room. But, I still need to get a lid for the sump and also need to put doors on my stand. I am guessing that after I do all of that, it should be almost silent.
