I agree, but keeping the natural hybrid as a sort of scientific "freak-show" would be interesting. I certainly wouldn't want it because it is an improvement over nature as many hybrid keepers seem to think. Quite the opposite!

An authentic biotope tank for Media Luna would certainly include the hybrids.

Anyone know if the hybrids (carpintis x lab) tend to select labs, hybrids or carpintis as mates?

Natural hybridiziation is also a mechanism for speciation: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC544937/

Would you keep those?

Matt

Good points Matt.

To take it to the highest level, who defines natural and unnatural hybridization anyway? A farmer digs a canal that lets in a new species = unnatural, but a beaver does the same = natural?

We should pose that question to a bunch of college potheads on a Friday night! It'd make their weekend! For directions, 3rd floor Creswell Hall, UGA.

Question: when and where have any of these hybrid labridens been sold in the hobby?
By whom?
It seems that there is a lot of talk about hybrid labs but few (dare I say 'no') instances where these fish have made there way into the hobby.
Who has them? Who sold them?

Are you contesting that hybrid labs have been sold? Certainly many/most didn't do it on purpose, but that is has happened isn't in question at all. It's a bit like denying that hybrid Midas/RD's have been sold.

I'm just asking for examples i.e. pics, threads, anything. I've never come across any instances of this, just a lot of reference to it. I think it would substantiate the discussion a bit, that's all.

I agree with flowerpower,Would be interesting to see a pic of one because since this thread was started i have searched for an example and could not find any. If someone could direct me in right direction it would be appreciated.(would like to see what that hybrid looks like)i believe anything mixed with a carpintis would have a very tell tell look. just my opinion though i am no hybrid expert but every thing i have seen mixed with a carpintis you could tell that is what it was mixed with.

Please Answer This Somebody, Post some pictures and let us know....

I believe some of the ones brought back from the Media Luna were later determined to be naturally/unnaturally occuring hybrids. I think Mo had some pics of them, this was a couple years ago though. I know other guys have had them as well. There's been plenty of discussion about it (probably too much). I bought some fish that turned out to be hybrids as well. If you know these fish at all you can tell.

Cichlid Room Companion has had a lot of discussion on this topic.
