do people really eat their cichlids?

just thinking about it makes sick!!! i hate sick in the head people!!

That's pretty gross! I wouldn't eat my fish that I have raised. They are pets to me, just like my Shiba-Inu (dog). Not to mention all the things that must change their bodies due to tank life, chemicals, and specialized food.

People raise pigs, cows, chickens etc in America (and different things in different parts of the world) as pets and then slaughter them to feed their families. This doesnt seem much different...a little less dramatic if you ask me. I dont think I could do the same to a pig or cow I had raised.

I also dont think that qualifies him as "sick in the head" anymore than someone who gets worked up about people eating fish.:screwy:

As far as the health issues, I think I read what someone else already posted...about some of the chemicals we use to treat tanks not to be used on fish that will be consumed for food.

I've eaten Jack Dempseys, snook and couple Jags many times, (maybe more) the jags are the best. If one gets injured or an incurable eye infection etc, better the pan than the garbage.
In the countries where these fish come from, they are staples.

+1 on these fish being staples in south america

Personally, I like my cichlids cooked whole. Just make sure to gut them, remove the gills, and grill/fry them well!

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I could bear to eat any of my current cichlids...but they are a tasty family of fishes!

Whoa never heard of people eating Cichlids in the US anyway, interesting. Although eating one that died might not be a good idea if you dont know what they died from. I mean cows, pigs, chickens are slaughtered. I dont think its a good idea to eat something when you dont know why it died. Maybe my GF the vegetarian has gotten to me but eating things that died or are your pets might be bad karma lol

I have an Oreochromis aureus, one of the same kinds of tilapia farmed as food fish, , but it is like a pet and I would never eat it. I raised it up from 1/8".

However, I have no problem at all eating tilapia. There is a taco joint here that makes fish tacos with blackened tilapia and its delicious.
