do people really eat their cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would I eat a Jaguar Cichlid that I have raised, that is my pet? No (especially if it were sick or had died mysteriously!)

However.

If I were on a vacation in Nicaragua fishing, and caught a Jaguar Cichlid, I would eat it in a heartbeat! Pan seared with a Mango, Papaya and Avacado salsa, on a bed of long grain rice, with a splash of fresh lemon. It would be delicioso!!!!

If they eat their fish cause they outgrow their tank that is f--- up!! Plus if you use cleaners such as Stress Coat -it is recommended not to eat them. Personally I cant do it-when my die I take it to a taxidermist and put it in my living room-I have quite the collection.

Pictures! thats a cool idea!

all i can say is yuck. someone try a pleco and tell us how it tasted. yuck yuck

I dont have the heart to eat one of my fish! I couldnt bring myself to do so, and I have enough trouble with the idea of eating something that has been in water with chemicals. If it just died one day, why did it die?
I dont exactly find it gross as I do enjoy fish but its a personal attachment for me

I would not eat a pleco, wild caught or otherwise. A pleco's diet would probably make it taste gamey/mossy.

But to say that eating a wild caught cichlid is gross is insulting to every person living in the areas where they are native.

People have been eating cichlids since they were able to catch them. We are talking thousands of years.

Should you eat fish from your aqaurium? Probably not

Should you eat wild caught cichlids? Yes, I imagine that they are as tasty as the Walleye, Perch, Catfish that we eat in the states, if not more so.

Also, just because you have a stigma about a certain food, you should not insult it. In Peru they eat guinea pigs, in southeast asia they eat cockroaches. You eat what is readily available, just because we drive to a supermarket or mcdonalds and grab whatever pleases us, doesn't make that the case for everyone in the world.

If I am lucky enough to make it to CA or SA for a vacation or otherwise, you had better believe I will eat any cichlid, catfish, mammal, bird they put in front of me. I would rather eat something that displeases my pallet than insult my hosts while I am a guest in their country.

I know it's a little different, but when my girl friend took me on vacation to her family's place in the Philippines their neighbor killed his dog so I could eat it; it tastes kind of beefy.
