Do you look down on the Nemo and Dory people?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think it was a barracuda. I haven't seen that movie in 3 or 4 years, my memory is a bit hazey.

Funny how that movie was all about the poor fish wanted to get out of the fish tank and people are like on I want them in my tank. The movie should make people Not want to keep fish in aquariums. Because most Saltwater fish are in fact still wild caught.

I don't care what they call them. Its like the new common name.

Dory was a paracanthurus Hepatus AKA Blue tang

it dosnt bother me if some one that has no clue what its calld says nemo or dory but when a guy thats ben keepen for years calls it a nemo or dory i just say realy guy. im not perfect and cant rcite the latin or scientific names of my fish but i know em just takes me a while to place the and i do think its great that people who want to learn how to keep these fish properly want them but the people that dont shuldnt imo.

What about "oscar","pleco", "african","arow" or "pima". I dont have the patience to try and recall all the "hap." this, "sub-species" that...whatever. If people care about the fish they keep and the fish are healthy does it really matter to anyone if you call it an Amphiprion percula, clownfish or Nemo? People who care about fish dont necessarily care what its called...its just cool. And BTW...how annoying is it if you say to someone,"hey, dude, thats a cool fish!" and they respond," why thank you young person, that is an Astronotus ocellatus." I dont speak Latin. Nobody does. Unless you're trying to inpress or incant. Its an Oscar.
Good thread OP.

I love endless ocean for showing people the REAL names of the fish (and cetaceans of course) instead of Nemos and Dory's Though, i am partial to blue tangs and of course the angel fish (Gill was it) But I will never go as far as a saltwater tank cause I love Cudas and i figure since they grow to 6ft or so Yeah im going to need a HUGE tank.. i'll stick with my arowanas and gars thank you :)

I read an article in National Geographic about this. Apparently sales of clown fish jumped about 25% after the movie was released.

I dont find it wrong to nickname a fish, but its sheer ignorance that makes me mad. Every time i go to petsmart do you guys have nemos? "WHAT!?!? Nemos are saltwater fish??" and a favorite "My nemo died" "What was it kept with?" "Oh some goldfish"

Uh today my sister and I went to the lfs that specalizes in marine life, I was just picking up prime and my sis goes over to a tank and says look it's nemo! Then she spotted a hippo tang and shouted Omg it's Dori! The owner was talking to me and she just sighed, and my sister asked me if I can buy one nemo and Dori to put in my freshwater tank. I tould her no they are saltwater and she just said so? And we practicly live everyweekend in the salt she knows the difference! Gosh preteens lol!

Alright, I've got a funny LFS experience involving "Nemo"...
Got to the store, looked around, found what I wanted, went to look for someone to help out. Had to go to the Saltwater section before finding an employee, and he had a couple looking to get two fish. The women said, "Can we have two of the Nemos?". Alright, I found that funny... but it got better. The employee goes, "You do know that they are saltwater fish?", they both looked confused, and say, "What's a saltwater fish???"
I tried my best not too laugh, but once the employee started, I couldn't help myself. :D
People need to get the correct names on fish. They see a movie, go, "Oh, they're pretty!" and go out and buy one, only to have it die knowing nothing about, not even the correct name!... I've seen it many times before... mostly my stupid friends of the past, lol.
