Do you look down on the Nemo and Dory people?

my daughter knows that "nemo" are also clownfish, however, just the issue with it being referred to a Nemo shouldn't be something people dislike, because if you think about it, someone who isn't into boxing at the time must have thought Jack Dempsey was a silly thing to name a fish...we can't forget they're just common names with no authority in terms of what is officially named what it is

I don't, as I'm sure car/computer/fashion people must have the same opinions of me when I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I've only heard these names used by very young children or parents towards their very young children. Why should it matter when kids are the main cause?

I dont mind.... I think it bothers people because most of the "nemo" people will never take proper are of their fish. Its not the name or new person to the hobby, its their ignorance to a fish and what it takes to properly care for one. Its a living animal, not a tv character.

What about "oscar","pleco", "african","arow" or "pima". I dont have the patience to try and recall all the "hap." this, "sub-species" that...whatever. If people care about the fish they keep and the fish are healthy does it really matter to anyone if you call it an Amphiprion percula, clownfish or Nemo? People who care about fish dont necessarily care what its called...its just cool. And BTW...how annoying is it if you say to someone,"hey, dude, thats a cool fish!" and they respond," why thank you young person, that is an Astronotus ocellatus." I dont speak Latin. Nobody does. Unless you're trying to inpress or incant. Its an Oscar.
Good thread OP.
Absolutely...
It's one thing when a couple of advanced fishkeepers are trying to cerebrally flex to one another, but when the average fishkeeper, doing a good job and keeping their fish healthy gets spoken down to, because they do not know the scientific names of everything that swims, I think that blows. It doesn't make them less of a fishkeeper, it makes them not interested in learning a bunch of names that 99.99% of the population doesn't understand. For all I know they could be BS'n me just to sound like they are some kind of superior fishkeeper.
As long as everybody knows the fish we are talking about, and we all use the same name who cares if it is Nemo, or Cory or Spot or whatever?
I'll bet not every dog or cat fancier knows the Latin name of their Mutt or pussy cat!...and they are great pet owners... great thread OP... KUDOS

I don't mind it, usually. It's when then come into the shop or aquarium and scream "Nemo" at everything the even resembles a clownfish. It gives me massive headaches rather quickly. Last time it happened I couldn't help but look at the kid and say, "Last time I checked Nemo made it back to the ocean, in Australia. Shows how much you were paying attention." in as calm a voice as I could. He got very quiet very fast. It bothers me even more when someone calls my anemone and clownfish sculpture "Nemo". It has a title, address it as such.

I've heard way to many kids refer to discus as "Dory".

Wow, pretty harsh. I would never speak to a kid like that over something so arbitrary. Wouldn't you have been humiliated if he ran and told his dad?
