Your on the right track in your thinking and not just doing. Think long and hard about both of these breeds both are guard dogs at heart and need even more training and socialization than many other breeds not that there is anything wrong with them. But as an aco the large majority of the problem dogs we have to deal with are guardian breeds. They have the instinct to protect and that must be channeled into the right times and places. I don't know you but think can you handle a guard dog are you naturally dominate person? Can your girlfriend handle either of these breeds? I've read all the dobie love here. And I don't disagree with any of it. Or any of the love for any breed for that matter. In the right hands any dog can be great. Just saying please make sure you are or become the right hands. I've seen so many children torn up because people didn't do the work it takes. Train train train and when you think you've trained enough train some more. You your dog and the public in general will all benefit from it. Good luck in finding your new best friend

Murse dog - lol - I had an apartment awhile back so I was limited to a small dog (aside from my therapy dog), and I had Raven, a min pin with big dog attitude. She was a great dog, smart as the big ones and easy to travel with in the Jeep. I had to give her up to a friend when I moved, I know she got a great home, but I still miss her and I lost touch with my friend after some years. Here she is with my old therapy dog Zeus, he has since passed on and I have a new therapy dog. I forgot how goofy everything was back then with the furniture too, we always had to keep the dog blanket on the couch because the fur would get stuck in the velvet - but the gf was happy so. ..
Now we have four dogs, all rescues and retrained, a chihuahua, a pomeranian, a mini poodle, and a bullmastiff. I never thought I would even like small dogs, but I think my favorite is the chi. She came from somewhere she was abused by boys and men, and she is attached to me for some reason and even likes my son (when he doesn't move too fast). As I type this I have a pom at my feet, a poodle laying by my thigh, and a chi laying against my hip. The bullmastiff, being as big as she is, is laying on the floor next to me. All dogs have their place, don't be surprised if you go to the pound one day and something finds you. If you had told me 5 years ago I would have these dogs now, I would never have believed you.
very true i used to own and hunt with fell and jagdterriersnothing is wrong with tiny dogs, some of the most hardcore dogs on the planet are under 25 pounds..
