Sometimes you don't have enough time to go to the store and but a book and some things you can't find an answer for on the internet because they don't always cover everything. Now i'm betting that between everybody on this site has had almost every kind of fish or has had extensive knowledge on all kinds of different fish. And you need an answer quick because your fish is gonna die from this disease and you know it but you can't figure it out cause your lfs has employed punk little teenagers who don't know squat about fish and really don't care. So, The only place to look is here. Cause that was my problem about two months ago before i found a better lfs.

I have to say that I do as much research as possible( internet, books, lfs, bulletin boards ) before making most purchases. The only time I would bypass this is if I find something rare that is not going to last long and needs to be snapped up. This is pretty rare though as I prefer to know all that I can before taking in a new fish.

I like to research then ask questions I have already found answers too, especially when I have found contradictory info. I also think that forums like this, where you can get first hand experience from people who have kept/worked with a fish you're interested in, are one of the best types of research. They can be a source of misinfo. though too, so you have to be smart enough to filter out the bs.
Do diatom filters work on bs?

I likes books. They is good.

seriously though, loved to read as a kid, and will always appreciate a good book. Have read Fenners "the conscientous marine aquarist" for years now and I dont even have SW,...yet.

MFK is the ultimate appendix however to anything I have read in print, and like mentioned, to share and hear of others experiences, will only broaden my knowledge of aquaria and help influence mah future pursuits in the hobby.

In answer to the original question always. Always do research, from the web, books, and forums such as this. Though you'd be surprised how many don't, many people think they can buy anything and wing it, and basically they can with giant corprate pet stores selling anything to anyone.
