Had a search and can't seem to find anyone here with large/mature ARTC (Hemibagrus wyckioides) and by large i mean 18-24"+.

Was wondering if anyone does and what their expereinces with this fish are? Temperament, Compatability, comfortable tank size, etc, or can link me to a thread that might be useful as i get differing information on it wherever i read.

Anyone?

Come on, don't be shy now.

Thanks.

mine was roughly 7" when i had to give him away to anoth MFK'er. maybe he'll have some pictures on here of the fish a little larger.... ill try my best with any of your questions though..

Thanks. Was it kept solitary or were their tank mates? how aggresive did you find it to be?

I have had the offer of a 21"er for free from my lfs for the last year now and wondering if there's anything i can actually do with it or just let them keep trying. I did think of trying it with a Jardini and started a thread asking about that, but that just seems to be an epic fail waiting to happen.

There are two ARTC's - Hemibagrus wyckioides and H. nemurus.
According to planet-catfish they will both kill every fish in their tank, and some people call H. wyckioides "the most aggressive fish in the world".

Ok this is probably why i'm getting differing information then. My 'Back to Nature Guide to Catfish' says this Amoung other things:

Mystus nemurus
Trade name: Asian Red-tailed Catfish
Distribution: Throughout Asia
Maximum total Length: 600mm (24")
Maintenance: An aggressive species capable of stripping the fins off other fishes, especially other catfishes. Suitable only for large feature-sized aquaria with large robust cichlids and barbs, etc. This species should not be maintained with similar catfishes or vulnerable fishes because of it's extreme predatory nature.

So how do i tell the differences between the 2 artc?! And how accurate is that info? Hence looking for anyone with experience of these fish at a large size for first hand advice.

the nemerus is what they call the albino artc
never has an albino wyckioides been documented atleast from what i have read.

the hemibagrius wyckioides is evil so is the mystus nemerus and so is the hemibagrius wyckii

my wyckioides was got when it was 1.5" and now it is almost 11" in 2 years
in these 2 years i have seen it kill many a fish much bigger than itself

there was one member on iah by the id mystus redtail, he had a wyckioides 20" or so, wonder where he is???

as to tank mates with the devil(wyckioides), it is a bad bad idea, it doesn't leave small fish(usually eats them the first night or till the day he is hungry), bigger tank mates lose chunks before they go

most of the time of the day hides in a pipe or pot or anything below which it can hide, the moment the lights are out starts patrolling the tank.

these guys are highly territorial, during the day time when i have tried to put earthworms near its place i have seen him push the earthworms away from his hideout :nilly: :dunce:

Thanks, that's what i need to know.

This is the guy i'm thinking of taking, i think i'm just trying to justify it to myself without it being a waste of space (sorry, pics are rubbish!)

I had a 12" one that I traded for a normal RTC. It attacked all of my fish at night - had a Midas, Jaguar, and TSN in with it. The Midas and Jag and had ripped fins constantly. When I saw a bite mark on the TSN I pulled the ARTC out of the tank. He never moved during the day, but at night he was constantly moving and tagging anyone that got in his way. I had the wyckioides version.
