Does anyone here actually have a large Asian RTC?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry for the thread revival but did you get it in the end? i've got one at 20" (wyckii) and can confirm hes a pain in the a## lol.

put it in with an aro' the same size. (rookie error) lasted four days.
strange thing was it was in with my oscar of 4years from day one and hadnt really touched him until recently. but the wyckii now started to go for him, so hes now at a friends. hard decision but best for the oscar.

i know i should get rid of the wyckii but imo hes a beauty and worth having the tank to himself. if i knew his temperament before i probably would not have got him,

but he is the reason i joined this site lol

ill get some pics up.

thread revival forgiven, it is a good thread, a jewel in the mud of the everyday, my rtc ate this, my rtc died dont know why, so on and so forth its actually a very informative thread, imo could be retitled and stickied hint hint to warn off any unknowing from buying artc...

Just curious what size tank he was in. When I had mine, he was still fairly small and in a 120g. It was still overstocked. I wonder what would have happened had he had a larger tank.

I have a lot of predators in my 450, but have never had a problem. Wonder what he would have done in there?

Hi all.

Real sorry to do this but I'm going to upset the Applecart! :D

There is much confusion over Nemurus / Wyc etc etc.
I will further muddy the waters by saying that there is also another Mystus / hemibagrus species called / labelled as Mystus Filamentus!!!
This fish however I believe to be Nemurus as it had 2 fin extensions to the Dorsal fin & had very little red to its tail if at all. If anything it was a shade of yellow.
I believe what Necronis (apolgise for the spelling) has described on here to be correct.
Generally 90% of the time anything with a true Pink / redtail is Wkycloides.

Back to the original thread I used to have one of these splendid fish, in fact Ive had two.
The 1st which i believe was Nemurus/ Filamnetus was given to me by my local FS as it was destroying EVERYTHING they put in with it and could no longer afford to have a rapidly growing fish taking a whole tank to itself.
It was approx 10" and was housed in my Tropical Pond with a 24" RTC, a 22" L.Mammoratus & a 18" G.Gourami.
It very quickly grew too approx 19" before it meet its untimely demise as some IDIOT (Me ) left a large opening in the cover after some maintainace.
By the time it had reached this size it was pretty much the Daddy of the pond & was definately aggresive but not so much that it was a problem.
It would even hand feed! :headbang2
I think however this was most definately the EXCEPTION to the rule & who knows how aggressive it may have become when bigger.
The 2nd one I had was 100% Wkyloides & was again picked up as someone had given it to one of my local shops.
This one was only about 4 - 5" and was an absolute brute - spent all the daylight hours hiding only to terrorise the aquarium during evening hours.
Bite marks started to appear on my much larger Fish, particulary my Knifefish so a friend took him off me.

If i could house another one, Id love to try again.
They are truly "WICKED" fish in every sense of the word.

hes in a 200g at the mo' but i know he will need rehoming again soon. currently hes in with a rtc approx 12", and they seem to get on ok.

the RTC along with 2 Clown knife fish were fish i was holding for a friend, the wyckii did not like the knifefish so they had to go. the RTC is advertised on aquatics classifieds but there doesn't seem to be any takers so far.

see how they go. prob is i can cover an upgrade to house the wyckii, but my budget does not stretch to house a RTC for life.

just give the rtc away, or let the wyckii eat it piece by piece and when it dies fillet it and freeze part of the meat to feed to the wyckii later. ok that sounds really mean maybe not like that but something a little less mean.

No i didn't get it, would have liked to but i'm in the middle of sorting out migrating and all my fish sadly have to go before i move. Will be starting fresh again soon hopefully:)

Good to see people are finding this thread useful as this is not a common fish to hear much about. Good seeing everyone's input;)
