  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha that's what I thought....why on earth Kansas though...I've been there a few times maybe I missed it but there isn't anything there. But I also have never been to the uni so maybe it's more exciting.

Like I've said before. Believing in everything happens for a reason is just the minds way to comfort the subconscious from the fear everyone has of the unknown. The human mind is designed to find links, and ties events together to make sense of things. Take korsakoff syndrome for instance. When the brain can't remember exactly what happened in the recent pass (up to a couple days) it fills in our memories with visual clues from the present. They have nothing to do with the truth, but your brain grafts them into the memory to make sense of things. There are a lot of scientific studies done on this phenomenon and all have said that the brain makes false links to make sense of randomness.
Example 1. There was a guy who added up a lot of random dates in a book and predicted someones return to earth on October 22, 1844 in upstate new York. Didn't happen. But more and more people went back every year because it made sense. It eliminated the random factor, therefor made them comfortable.

Example 2. Goldbach's conjecture. This theory states that every number is the sum of two primes. Which works but the process for each number is different. Which supports the argument of trying to make sense of randomness by proving links are there that aren't. Btw there are about 100 theories of ways to link every number. In the end stating that everything is random has scientific evidence supporting it the opposite doesn't. In all it comes down to if u believe science or religion.

I would also like to add that I don't have a problem with religious belief just not when science can already explain it. When u can test and prove a Theory it is irrefutable evidence.

Interesting point. Look at the drop of African-American players from baseball, but look at the large influx of Latin players from developing nations. We also know that baseball equiptment is expensive, when compared to basketball or soccer. We also know that in Latin nations, next to soccer, baselball is a national sport. There are many variables . . .

Yeah, i believe when people are passionate about something IE latin in baseball, canadians with hockey, soccer in mexico, new york city in all things sports etc etc, you'll see a rise in participants. I don't know how to explain the decline in african american in baseball other then money being easier to make in football and basketball on pure athletic ability but i know pick up baseball games are easy to get goin in areas where people are into it. All you need is a few bats and few balls and an open field. Baseball was my sport so I envy those developing latin nations. I also find it odd that china/japan dominates in LLWS but dominicans dominate at the amateur and professional level.

There's just so many variables for so many things.....one of the fun interesting thing my friends and i do is try to place a modern athlete into another sport and explain why you think they would've been good in it. Like Allen Iverson in soccer because he's fast and quick with change of directions and fearless and gives up his body. Kobe in any individual sport like tennis or cycling because of his sheer will and determination to be the best.

Anyways, great thread guys. It was enjoyable to read

For a reason? Yes! For a good reason? Sometimes no!

Not always!

No, everything is random

I agree with Lep, but even if everything wasn't random you could not choose a significant number for this theory because there is no solid time frame that it exists within. You could as easily say things happen in two's and just allow less time between the chains, etc.
