does the law stop you from buying fish?

It's not so much the law that stops me as my own desire to be a responsible fishkeeper. I can get northern snakehead not five minutes from my house, but alas, I refrain *sigh*

Some of the possible penalties if caught owning an illegal fish are fines, confiscation of fish and equipment, being court banned from owning fish and equipment, and in some cases a felony record which means loss of the right to own firearms and hassles getting many jobs. If you are caught in a trafficking sting the stakes go up and not only do the fines get bigger you can lose the right to get a passport or have yours flagged as a smuggler and that leads to hassles at airports or even being not allowed into some countries.
