IMO, the toxic gas that results from deep sand beds (3") is more of a concern. It is visible when you stir up the sand and you see bubbles are released. The bubbles are really toxic gas formed by anerobic (oxygenless) bacteria after converting nitrates, so make sure that your fish is not above where you're stirring the bubbles (I use a wand and a net to keep the fish away). The toxic gas is really the conversion of nitrates (useful, into gas). Just stir the sand every 6 weeks or so.
Note, you don't need 3" of sand everywhere to get toxic buildup, just deep enough at some points. My large pleco has a habit of pushing sand in the corners, where this toxic buildup is the greatest. Normally, sand is just over 1" thick, but gets deeper in the corners.
