aNYBODY WHO REALLY KNOWS ABOUT THIS WILL TELL YOU THAT A FISHTANK WITH GLASS CLOSED TOPS PRODUCES TOXIC GAS THAT LINGER IN THE TANK IF THEY HAVE NOWAY TO ESCAPE THAT IS WHY i WAS TOLD MY 110 NEVER HAS ANY PROBLEMS BESIDES MY REGULAR MAIN. GAS RELEASE FROM THE TOP MAKING YOUR WATER IN THE TANK MORE RICH AND HEALTHY LOOK IT UP NEXT TIME BEFORE CRITIZING!

Glass tops aren't sealed. There's room at the back for heaters, etc... which leaves a large gap for gas exchange anyways.

IMO, the toxic gas that results from deep sand beds (3") is more of a concern. It is visible when you stir up the sand and you see bubbles are released. The bubbles are really toxic gas formed by anerobic (oxygenless) bacteria after converting nitrates, so make sure that your fish is not above where you're stirring the bubbles (I use a wand and a net to keep the fish away). The toxic gas is really the conversion of nitrates (useful, into gas). Just stir the sand every 6 weeks or so.

Note, you don't need 3" of sand everywhere to get toxic buildup, just deep enough at some points. My large pleco has a habit of pushing sand in the corners, where this toxic buildup is the greatest. Normally, sand is just over 1" thick, but gets deeper in the corners.

lose the caps, it's just annoying. it doesn't emphasize your point, it just makes us want to mock you.

+1 for new guy!

the gaps at the back are plenty of room for gas exchange. if there is detrius and/or feces buried in the sand they can produce gas pockets. regular stirring of the sand bed and such will eliminate this possibility.

oh and, welcome Nate!

NO I DIDN'T KNOW BUT THANKS FOR TELLING ME! THAT'S WHY I LOVE MFK! I LEARN SOMETHING NEW ALL THE TIME! AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO YELL AT ME, I WAS JUST MESSING AROUND.:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

A problem I had one time......

my glass was sitting directly on the top of the tank, not down in on the ledge, as I was too lazy to cut the glass, well one day I thought my tank was leaking, stand was wet, etc...

Well after I shut my air bubbles off the water stopped seeping through the top and down the back into the stand.......everything dried up! and it is no longer leaking.

moral of the story is if you think it's leaking and you have air in there, try shutting it off, the wetness may stop :)

I cant repeat the drip yet ! Thats a good thing. I am running alot of air in my UGF so maybe that was causing it. Either way crossing fingers not a drop yet. Thanks again to all
