Dorm tank or no dorm tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha, luv the feed back. The reason I don't want a small tank is cause I already have one with my roommates. And small tanks I hate cause it takes a little longer to get the small things right. Large tanks for me are ready to go within a few days. As for the people watching the fish eat other fish? It's not gonna happen, fish fillets and defrosted shrimp hell yeah, but I'm against feeders unless they are gutloaded prawns, ghosties or crickets.

As for studies? I am a deans list student with a scholarship so a tank for me is the last thing thats gonna hold me up, plus its calming seeing a something you are so use to seeing at home. Also, I am not in a frat so not too much drinking/partying is going on in my apartment most of it takes place in one apartment and only one apartment.

Pets are not allowed in my dorms except for fish, although my ball pythons will be coming with me since the dean an resident assistants and I are on good terms :D.

Hmmm, well, I'm finishing university now, and in my opinion I'd say wait until youre out of the dorms. I can't even imagine what might have happened had I kept a fish tank in my dorm room... not that we were allowed to.. but if I had. The social life alone in residence will keep you from taking proper care of them, and the madness of first year... Up to you, but I'd say wait until youve got your own place off campus.

I'd go for the 125gal, but not a 75gal too. two tanks might be too much to handle with moving it every 15 weeks. i would just go with one tank. even the 75gal would do fine.

The reason I want to do it now is because there is no water bill or electricity bill :D Almost made me want to start reef over again :D But I agree a single tank would be better.

I forgot who said appistos, but I have a tank in my current dorm with a male MacMasterii and a female Borelii

Haha, planned ahead. I have a request for first floor rooms only :D I'd be very peaved if I got top floor tank.

Do they even alow tanks that large there? What will you do for winter/spring/summer break? I have nightmares about having to move large tanks.

Hey Pufferpunk long time no see since moving from The Puffer Forum. Large tanks are allowed it seems. A guy in my apartment use to have a 180 with iridescent sharks in his single.

This tank is to be setup in a room where NO drunk or high person is to be stumbling in and having their way with the tank just so you know!
I myself last year thought the same thing, not to worry about drunks, but it is still a legit. concern, and if you go for it, just be very carefull, last year my roomate and I had two tens, and I was nervous about those even. College is unpredicable its not that you invite company, its that they invite themselves in when drunk whenever they feel like, and even if the doors locked, if you go to answer it, sometimes they fall/push into the room, and thier stumbling/grabbing to stay up (even at the tanks) making it sometimes huge risk, i had some very close encounters last year as a result. If you want go for it, personally I'd probably do it, but still be aware it can happen. With that said, I have tanks with me at college (a 90, 55, 20, 12, multiple 10s, as well as my roomates 55) but mainly its because I'm living off campus in a house, where no drunk is just going to stumble my way, as well as the fact that they can remain here the entire school year.
Also if you do it, make sure to find a friend with a truck, it makes moving tanks alot easier!

I'd vote no...but for a couple of very differant reasons...

(1) You WILL be moving this tank relitivly soon and disrupting the fish and the carefully controled environment you've created in a big way. Run a search on the board for disasterious attempted moves home...

(2) This is going to take up a LOT of your time and effort....It will also limit travel options that have a way of cropping up. It's almost impossable to get familly members to care for your fish properly...Dorm buddies? Thats just asking for a disaster IMO.
