dovii and 5 spot jewels??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I raised some of these back in the 80s.They are truly beautiful fish, but they were the most aggressive fish I have ever owned.I started with 8 and was down to 2 in less then 3 months.l would be worried about the dovii, the one's I have are lambs in comparison! ( They are only 6-7") Obviously the dovii will far out distance them and probably eat them at some point but they are nasty buggers!

really, thats a shame, if you google the latin name they are near the top on images... some other red ones on there.., where none of yours red? i think i am going a differnt way now, thanks for the info tho pal.

Which species are you refering to? Hemichromis elongatus, Hemichromis frempongi, or Hemichromis fasciatus? I assume you mean elongatus. The ones I grew I think were elongatus and they had some red on them like many of the pictures you find when you google it. But the most amazing ones you see in the google photos, I have not seen any like those. Just because I hadn't seen them, does not mean they don't exist. What seemed really odd about the picture you posted was extent & intensity of the red and the blue fins. There are other google images showing far more red that I have seen before, but I have never seen the blue fins. There was some irridecense in the fins, but nothing like that one photo. Again, just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean they don't exist, just looked odd to me.

Thats a good point. I believe what I had were H. fasciatus, but it was a long time ago.

is elongatus mate yeah.

I believe the H. Elongatus pic you posted is the Cameroon species. Very beatufil fish. If you youtube it, you'll see the guys actual pair. I believe they're wild caught as well. H. Fascitus gets bigger then the H. Elongatus, but 100 times more aggressive.

Wow I have a little dovii and a little 5 star currently living together there both small right now about 3.5 in

I have 2 H. Fempongi's about 3-3.5" and 2 Dovii the same size... The male H. Fempongi is rippin everyone up... My H. Fasciatus male when he was 3-3.5" kill 5 dovvi the same size... He has a rap sheet.

Here's a vid of when I first got him.

If you look in the top left corner, I believe there were 2-3 dovii and that's a red devil he's chasing around.
