I was curious about some slime on my driftwood. It is completely clear and I actually can't see it with my own eye. I could only tell it was there when I touched the surface of the wood. It was slimy in certain areas and in others it was not. This slime appeared while I was soaking it and it appeared very quickly, within a day of putting it in the water. Is this fungi, algae, or something else? I'm not sure what to think of it but I'm going to boil it tomorrow and make sure it's completely sterilized. It would help to know what it may be, however, just to have a peace of mind. I appreciate any responses and thank you for taking the time to read this :)!!

Slime is normal.. It goes away on its own.. Unless you have some fishies that like to eat it.

Gosh I wouldn't mind puns but crude jokes I feel would just come from such slimy people, y'know? But if that's the case that's a huge relief :D! I'll put the driftwood in by tomorrow :D

Any pleco will love it.

No need to sterilize, it'd come back

not sure what happened there little If offended by some one sorry. slime or algae normal for wood. it will not hurt your fish. If you have a big enough tank can run a pleco to keep it polished up. other wise just leave it be, IMHO.

Oh no not at all! I was just trying to make a pun (if you were commenting on my comments above about slimy people). I guess it fell flat :P
That's great to know! I do love plecos, so maybe someday I can actually run one (the tank I have at the moment isn't my final tank so I'd like to wait for a bit. The final tank will have to be around 1000-1200 gallons as I'm going to have 11 goldfish x0 (animal enthusiasts really doom themselves with the amount of animals they take on).

it is unsettling to see on driftwood the first time haha, but its inert as stated by everyone above. you may notice it grow in size to were you can see it on the wood without touching it, and it may turn into what looks like white algae growing off the wood as well, but still no big deal unless you're one of those fish keepers that has to keep everything in the tank show quality 100% of the time haha.
