Dumbest thing you've done in/to aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just made this mistake yesterday. DUMB:irked:DUMB:irked:DUMB:irked:.

I was reading Guppy's post on how to rid Ick and instead of measuring 2 teaspoons per gallon. I added 2 TABLESPOONS per gallon.

Good thing it was only the feeder tank not the main.

built a 300 gallon tank and didn't seal it as good as i should have because i wanted to hurry up and have a 300 gallon tank... the leak couldn't have been up top! ohhh noooo! it had to be at the very bottom so that i had 300 gallons of water on my floor! bye bye carpet...

Mentioned that I needed to give my tanks a good cleaning in front of a fish happy 4 year-old that my wife was watching. My 20 long and 29 each ended up with a gallon of Tide detergent in them. Fortunately she was too short to reach the 45. Had one survivor, a yoyo loach that lasted another three years.
Couldn't even be mad at the kid, she was devastated when she understood what she did killed the fish. I started teaching her proper tank maintenance after that and guess what? She has stayed with it, almost every Saturday she comes and helps me, she does the 20 and 29 while I do the big tanks, I think we have another lifer, lol. My wife has limited me in number but not gallonage, so when I get my next tank, short stuff gets the 20 long. She doesn't know that she's getting it, but I talked it over with her dad and he agreed she could have it.

That is pretty cool! :headbang2

I once tried to lower my PH using top fin chemicals.

Cross contaminated a tank with ick with a show tank (Used a python on both tanks within like 15 minutes of each other)

And most recently not noticing my stealth heater had broken and shot the temp on my 90 gallon tank to 91 degrees for approximately 24 hours maybe slightly more. Luckily it was a bichir only tank and they were alright.... Wish they had an indicator light.

Even more recently in an immature revenge move I returned the aforementioned heater to marineland with some year old dead cichlids in my freezer attached to the heater with rubber bands. They show they have not received it yet lol. I hope the Fedex guys did not throw it out.

 Classic. I just used a Tetra Heater that did the same to me(but with lethal results to the tank inhabitants, I was gone too long), but only used it as an odd shaped skeet target.

Lots of mistakes when I was a kid. I didnt cycle tanks, I washed media with tap water, I put incompatibel fish together, I overstocked tanks etc. That was when I was a kid though.

The other day I had the python siphon in the tank and was filling it up. I got distracted with doing something with the filter and wasnt paying attention, next thing you know it was overlfowed and water started pouring out of the tank. I had to move the stop switch and run to the bathroom to stop the water. Not mcuh overflowed, maybe like a gallons worth of water.

Also, this has hapened twice recently. I have drained the water too low and exposing the heater without shutting it off. Then i'd refill the tank. In the past when I was a kid I popped a heater like this. This time it hasnt happened but I gotta be more careful. Two to three times now the hood has fell into the tank while doing maintenance and I reached in an grabbed it while it was still plugged in.

This happened to a friend. He had an big oscar and the tank had no lid. Well, one day they painted the room and didnt do anything to protect the tank. The oscar ended up dying from the vapors from the paint.
