EBJD growth and true max size

I see dozens of posts about EBJD, but it seems quite hard to find any full grown adults. In fact I find it near impossible to find pictures of any much bigger than 4”. This is mine, a little over 5”, around 14 months old.

If anyone has any pictures of bigger ones, or can give a good idea of what a realistic max size (and how long it will take to get there) that would be greatly appreciated! Websites say anything from 6-12”, I know 12” is definitely wrong, but no idea what the real likely max is.

I got this guy a year and a half ago.
I kept him for about eight months maybe, then gave him to YankeeJack , a fellow MFK'er
This is him the day I sent him off. Now about mid November he will be a year and a half old not counting breeder/in store time. Yankeejack just posted an update pic of him now seven inches long.

I have heard they have weak genes so most don't live that long into adulthood.

I've kept EBJD's in the past up to about 6 inch.
To me your pic looks like a normal or regular JD. It may be just that pic, but that's how it looks to me. I might need correcting on this. Very nice fish BTW.

He’s definitely an electric blue, he’s just turned away from the light source so he isn’t as shiny and bright in that pic. This one may be better.

If anyone knows how to sex them from the pics I posted that would be great, he is incredibly elusive in the heavily planted tank he’s in, and I didn’t bother to vent him when I moved.

I re-measured and vented him in a net, he just snatched a giant pile of bloodworms and slowed down for a few minutes lol. He’s actually just shy of 6” at 14 months, so from what I’m gathering in averages, he’s either just about done growing, or maybe has 1-2” at most to grow over the duration of his life

I got mine last December (so ive owned him for 11 months) he grew from under an once to 7 inches now.

Yea I really expected mine to get a lot bigger than it has, he’s dwarfed by my super red Severum. I had a regular jack dempsey when I was a teenager and that made my EBJD look like it’s still a fry at 6” lol

It is possible you have a female, it’s hard to tell with your pictures and plus EBJDs are difficult to sex as it is.

Females stay at the 6-7 inch range.
