Thanks, Stanz! I'm definitely going to move the heater to one corner or the other, I was just in the zone when scaping and doing my water change lol The branches are actually from a tree right out front of my apartment, and the rocks are all from the parking lot of my LFS (they rip me off, so I'll rip them off lol)
I'm also considering some greenery in the tank to help with the black background but I've got to look in to different lighting and some low-tech plants. I don't know much about plants, but I know I want to avoid using co2 lol and the current lights I'm using are simply two "clamp on reading LED lights" so I doubt those are strong enough for any plants

Try hornwart, it's really easy to grow under any lighting.I used to just throw it in and let it find its own way around the tank.it also looks good wrapped around branches as it does not need to be planted.
Here is my Old gt tank when I had some.

i'll definitely have to look in to Hornwart. I just checked the store I usually go to and they don't seem to have any in stock at any of their locations

This is the store I frequent just bc it's close/convenient. I shop at the "Branford" location
There's another LFS (small, non-chain) near my old place of employment that I used to go to on lunch just to hang out, I'll have to check in on them and see what they have in stock

Just had a look at that list.
From the plants they have java fern and java moss are easy in low light and don't need ferts.

That's what I was hoping for... since I brought it up I've been researching the best aquatic plants for "beginners" and many different sources said that Java fern/moss is rather easy to take care of, as well as some anubias'

I may be making a trip to the store sooner than expected :D
 
The fish and tank are looking great! The cheapest black background I have found is just construction paper from the dollar store - it's $1 for a 24" x 28" piece. What I do is tuck it under the top trim of the aquarium and tape in place (the tape is not visible from the front of the tank since it's on the backside of the paper and the trim - you're effectively taping the paper to the trim, but the paper is tucked under the trim so no light gets through).

Then I use a box cutter to slice the paper at the top of the trim on the bottom. I don't tuck it in because I keep my substrate at a depth higher than the trim so any gaps are not visible. voila! That's it.

It takes about 2 minutes, and costs next to nothing, you can do it with water in the tank (if you can reach behind the tank).

I'm not going to say it looks as nice as a painted black background, but it looks good and costs a lot less and takes a fraction of the time.
