EHEIM 2260 or FX5???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and you think having a new filter running for 4yrs is a good thing come back when they have been running for 15yrs+

you will hit on anything wont you? YOU thought the filter would never last past a year. I remember that heated argument on fishforums.net. His has lasted 4 years. Mine has lasted over a year. May have had these for over a year without any issues.

have fluval got a new type fx5 I WOUNDER WHY

I spoke to Hagen about this a while back. There was no "new" type of filter. The handles on the valves are all that has been changed.

and its not all about flow rates its about the amount of media and the contact time the water has with it
6 liters of bio media is A LOT compaired to most filters on the market. The amount of media is not the issue here, its the velocity and contact time. Ehiem has a velocity of .168 inches per secound (VERY ROUGH CALC. I don't know the actual dimentions) where as the Fx5 as 1.5 inches per second. Velocity and Contact time can't be mixed up to be the same.

The Fx5 still removed the same amount of ammonia the Eheim 2080 did. Cycle time is not as important as the nitrification cycle after the filter is cycled. The Eheim did beat the Fx5 in cycle time, but the fx5 still did remove the same amount of ammonia given which means the Fx5 is still in the running.

the fx5 is a bad design thats why people are having to mod them because they are not happy
The Fx5 is not a bad design. Its not the "Best" design the Hagen could have used.

BTW, my Fx5 dominates your Ehiem 2080. Sorry, Your Eheim just can't stand up to a modded Fx5.

We don't you stop with this BS since you ruin every thread. Grow up. You act like a child.

if you have a low budget and want a disposable filter buy the fx5 if you want a filter thats going to last buy the ehiem

if you want the best buy eheim

the fx5 is a bad design thats why people are having to mod them because they are not happy

and its not all about flow rates its about the amount of media and the contact time the water has with it

the amount of media in a fx5 is a joke its just one big sponge

have fluval got a new type fx5 I WOUNDER WHY

at the end of the day buy the filter you want set it up out of the box and be happy IF NOT SET UP A WEB PAGE ON HOW TO MOD YOUR PILE OF JUNK

Ive been reading through the forums on this site since it started MANY YEARS AGO! I have also read MANY threads and posts of yours! I think you have a great setup BUT you come across like you KNOW EVERYTHING lol when really your not much of an expert at all.Your ALWAYS going on about how Eheim are so GREAT etc...I own Eheims and Fluvals and run MANY different types of monster tanks...YES larger than your seven footer! AND i can still say i prefer the Fx5.

Just because someone has a LOW post count DOES NOT mean they dont know what they are on about! YOU GET ME! So SORT IT OUT.;)

post count means nothing it just shows you have not had much input on the forum YOU GET ME INIT

we are all entitled to our opinions and my opinion is the FX5 is a pile of junk

just as some people are allowed to set up a web site dedicated to how great the FX5 is I'm entitled to say how rubbish i think it is

the cycle time maybe low on a fx5 and considering how often you need to clean it compared to a 2080 i would say it important

i clean my 2080 once every 6 months how often do you need to clean a FX5

and my stock levels are higher than most even when i clean mine i only chage the white pad the rest of the filter is still in good shape meaning the 2080 brakes down bacteria well

To each his/her own. I haven't had any eheims but do have four cannister filters by hagen...a 405 and three FX5s, and have had for several years. My water quality is superb on all of my tanks and I am happy. My maintenance is minimal. So it works for me and I have no complaints.

It really baffles me how some people can take things to such extremes...Acting as if their word is law. I do not understand why we cannot be civilized in our agreements or disagreements. The endeavor of this forum is to educate and provide opinions...reasonably informed opinions...Why can't we leave the childish, ignorant, extra banter for people we can speak to face to face as opposed to talking smack from across the world via this information highway. This type of behavior is unwarranted, unmerited, and simply uncalled for. One would think that we would be more mature than to behave this way. Then again, our world would be dull and uneventful if there were no jerks.

As you were...

im with ABOVE^^^^^
:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

ok so the eheim is better quality and has more media capacity than the fluval,
the fluval has more turnover of water,
the pump is at the bottom of the canister and in my setup i have sand so thats either going to sit next to or go through the pump impeller often.

ok then as rays find ammonia, nitrites and nitrates harmful, and the filter will need to be cleaned frequently what does every1 say now???
what is best for removing ammonia from the water column.
and i do know rays need water changes very often before any1 goes down that road!!:grinno:

debate OPEN:chillpill:

Thats fine, many don't like the fx5, but you don't have to try and make others believe that its a POS and its a horrible filter, and it doesn't do any good on an aquarium compaired to an Eheim 2080.

The fx5 has been proven to be a fantastic filter. You can't change that.

just as some people are allowed to set up a web site dedicated to how great the FX5 is I'm entitled to say how rubbish i think it is
You obveously have a very narrow mind because if you read the website, its not all about how great the filter is, I list its down falls and tell others it had a rocky start on the market and I do list its issues it has had. So guess what, the website, is not all about how great the filter is.

the cycle time maybe low on a fx5 and considering how often you need to clean it compared to a 2080 i would say it important
I cleaned my Fx5 every 4-5 months. Is that REALLY that bad? That was BEFORE it was modified. Think of it this way, a polishing pad will fill up faster in a fx5 for two reasons, 1) it has double the flow of the 2080 and 2) the surface area. The Fx5 filters mechanically a LOT faster than the eheim.

i clean my 2080 once every 6 months how often do you need to clean a FX5
Read above. You have no argument.

and my stock levels are higher than most even when i clean mine i only chage the white pad the rest of the filter is still in good shape meaning the 2080 brakes down bacteria well
The rest of the filter is well which means the bio is working? what kind of BS is that? You mean your stats are fine? GREAT! Same with Fx5 owners.

Lets keep it going though.

The Eheim 2080 is crap and the fx5 dominates!!!

ok then as rays find ammonia, nitrites and nitrates harmful, and the filter will need to be cleaned frequently what does every1 say now???
what is best for removing ammonia from the water column.
and i do know rays need water changes very often before any1 goes down that road!!
Im lost here. bio filtration doesn't mean anything about how often you need to clean the filter....

I love it when things get heated, well said Richard. German engineering ay richard, we both have awesome german cars while puntoturbo must have a Punto which I beleive were voted the most unreliable cars in the past 12 years.
Same with fluval really lol. We used to get loads of returns of the 04/05 models and I mean loads when I was in the trade.

Cant beat german engineering thats all I can say, and its not all about flow rates at all. I can garantee a FX5 filled when the best media couldnt cope with filtering my 680ltr/ 180g tank. They have always over rated their filters. 1500 litres, yeah right.

Anyway people thats my opinon and beleive everyone has a right to there own, Eheim all the way for me! Peace:screwy:

yeah i shot myself in the arse im a bit sleepy LOL,

what filter is best for rays? from what im reading the FX5 for ease of cleaning as rays like clean nitrate free water and the bioload in the 2260 will help turn the nitrogen cycle IE ammonia>nitrites>nitrates. i think that is right LOL
thanks for the help
keep it coming!

T1karmann and I are both british ray keepers, and use eheim, neither of us clean our filters less than every 4-6 months. I'll let you make your mind up, can give you link for second hand 2260 and pro 3 on aquarist or just find them yourself dude
