endless supply of feeders

hmmm, it would take thousands of mollies or guppies to feed my catfish every other day, do you think i can make it work?

hmmm... ...do you think i can make it work?

I would lean toward trying to catch some fish in the wild. Since you are in Montana, you are limited to lakes, streams, and bait shops :naughty: Have you seen one of those barrel minnow traps? You can buy the hardware cloth at Home Depot and then make dozens of them really cheap. That would make a great winter time project. You place the minnow traps in line with the current in shallow water. They can be baited for lakes where there isn't any current to flush minnows in. When I was a kid, I would catch my own juvenile trout (for my fish tank) at the tiniest stream near my house. I used a square frame covered in window screen with a string tied to each corner. The four strings were knotted above to a single pull cord. While wading in the water, I would stand still until the fish started nibbling at my feet and legs. Then I would pull up the net to see what I had scored. You can increase your take by making your net a deep bowl shape or box shaped and using this (or several) over a bridge. Keep a large tank stocked with your catch for the winter time.

i buy some white suckers every now and again from the bait shop next to my house. He sales them for $3 a dozen. they are about 8-12" a piece. they last about 3 days. then i feed jumbo shrimp most of the time. i might have to look into the minnow traps and set up a cheap Q-tank.
thanks

im summer here you can get thousands of gambusias and if you catch them and kill em (or use them for fish food food ) your doing the environment a fovour (as they are introduced)

Thanks for the good idea,I've got tanks and jars of White clouds all over the place but their slow as the adults soon disapear . my bairn would love to see live bearers ,very educational, and extra fish always come in handy .I'll be trying to lower the cost though ,one of my interests is being tight .I get alot of disturbed sleep as three ghosts keep waking me.
All the best,
G.J.

Gotta question - I want to try to breed convicts as feeders. I've tried guppies but they grow way too slow and I have 3 bichirs and some knives to feed. I've never even owned convicts... how long would it take fry to be 3/4'' inch long to an inch long? And how often to they breed?

I am cycling a 90g with guppies and danios. 10 danios and 2 fem guppies and 1 male. Hopefully I will get some fry out of that. I also bought my wife 2 fem convicts and 1 male for her 55g. Lets see what I get.
