That's strange mine are very active and outgoing.

I have been very disappointed with german blue ram cichlids. They were one of my favorites. They just die. For no reason. I thought it my just be because they were from petsmart. So I special ordered a few from my lfs. They even quarantined them for 2 weeks before I took them home. They did excellent for a few months and strangely died. I drove down to milwaukee to Hoffer's and paid $30 for a breeding pair of german blue rams. They too also expired after a few months. Tank parameters were fine. Filtration was good. Plants were flourishing, the bolivian rams were spawning, my angelfish were beautiful. But the german rams just died.

People have theorized that they have short life expectancies from being selectively bred for their coloration. Many dont get their distinct coloration until they are older, maybe this is part of it.

I just stick with bolivian rams now

Odd balls and novelty fish are not my thing, my attention almost always gravitates towards central American and Madagascan cichlids.
And I often have the opposite experience, and will pick up fish at auctions as they become available, or just because I have never had them before, and find they exceed my expectations.
An example........... I have always been partial to cichlids of the genus Astatheros, but the A. longimanus I had seen in LFSs and photos seemed wimpy, and less than interesting.
Yet in a box swap with the Capital Cichlid club I ended up with some A. longimanus Lake Nicaragua, and the opposite of my previous expectations have been the result.
They started as 1/2" fry, and in a very short time, have grown into confident, robust, and colorful (for their age) young cichlids.

I have to agree with A. Longimanus. I have seen a lot of pictures that are like meh..but when I see pics from Jeff Rapps they look amazing as adults. Yours looks great.

Fahaka puffer- I had Green spotted for years and was always envious of others with fahakas. I had to order one online because htey were never available near me. I finally got it and it just laid on the bottom except feeding time. Kept it for 2 months but the aquarium was like staring at an empty box of water. I still get the itch when I see others with them but not going to risk it again.

EBJD - They never last more than 6 months with me before they stop eating and die.

Salvini - To aggressive with no real personality just sat in a cave until a fish swam by that it wanted to attack.

The fish I hated the most was 2 gulper catfish. They would hide all day. And I would literally have to use tongs and hold the food in front of their face for them to eat it. The basically never moved. And their color is nothing to stare at haha.

I would also add silver dollars to this list. Fantastic looking fish, great eating habits and interaction, until...they spook, which is basically any time something outside or inside the tank moves.

Mine would smash against the sides, and panic every other fish I had

my hairy puffer, another rock fish except at feeding times, oh and the second day i had him he puffed that was cool but never saw that again! after a few months a moved him on to a more enthusiastic home...

my fault these two, bought a wild oscar and on another occassion a ranchu, i got home to find fin deformitys so took them back a few days/weeks later.

spotted Raphael i never saw... erm, recently i was sold a supposedly very aggressive true parrot fish which got beaten badly in my aggressive comm, within an hour i took him to a lfs and traded him for a jag, the sellers fault in this instance.

Silver dollars are the most skittish fish I've ever had. They look nice, especially the widebar ones, but you walk up to the tank a little too fast and all 5 of them will bash their faces into the glass. That's why many of them have damage to their faces, cuz they're so dumb and scared of their owners that they'll pound their own faces into the glass.

Many of you are describing the fish`s natural behavior. If your fish are skittish they are lacking security. Catfish are for the most part nocturnal, therefore lay about or hide all day. How can you expect them to behave differently? Fish croaking after a couple of months is another thing altogether. Sometimes we loss fish and try as we might we can`t figure out why. The fact is though there is a reason, we just missed it.

I am not trolling here. That`s just how I see it.

1)Electric blue anything -why did I throw money away again they're probably going to die in 2 weeks AGAIN (they're just so blue I can't help myself for some reason)
2) Bumble Bee catfish - I got the south american one -it's a really cool fish with sweet markings I have 1 confirmed sighting in 2 months woo.
3) Convict rescue I guess that should've been number 1 actually LOL- they're fine by themselves but more than one is a bad call imo. The only fish I can think of that can go from feeder to father in less than a year lmfao

Yes,I've mentioned this about the nocturnal catfish a few posts ago and I think you are on to something as far as the skittishness,in my case anyhow.I have heard that odoe act totally different when they are kept in a small group.I may try that some day.
