Ever feel odd about fish????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's not too bad depending on who you hang out with. My parents and most of my family (not all) think its crazy to keep a fish in anything other than a bowl or small tank. They're a bit on the of old school side; dogs and cats to them, make much more sense as pets.

A lot of my friends (more my age) that my wife and I have over to the house on the other hand, tend to get a little more interested in the hobby. Some (I feel proud to say) have even started their own aquariums becuase they saw that once you got it up and going, it was a fun hobby. I wasn't interested at all in aquariums until my first Oscar, since then I have gone from a small box set, store bought tank to my current 340 gal project.

I'll agree with the above posts and admit, you do get an odd look or two and maybe even a "Your fish tank is how big?" every once in a while. In the end it doesn't really matter though. It's a hobby, and like all other hobby's its expensive. I don't spend any more money on fishkeeping than I have or currently do spend on any of my other hobbies and interests. What you're into isn't always going to be everybody else's cup of tea. I say as long as your into it and have the spare cash, go for it!

I have 3 dogs, so I just say that. :) As for the money end of it, most of my friends are triathletes/cyclists and ride $10K bicycles. They have no room to talk.

is it me, or no point is made here  well its kinna early in the morning here probably ill get it later just sayin

So am I the only one that feels odd when people ask if you have pets and I say yes fish.

like most hobbies, only those into the hobby understand the hobby. You'd look at a train fanatic the same way, if you heard he was going to spend 1000 dollars on a couple buildings for his layout.

I should have quoted so you can follow along! lol

I just force fishkeeping upon my family and co-workers... it works!!

I can relate when the girls at work are talking about buying a brand new purse or clothes or whatever and spending big $$ on it.. .. I look at them like there nuts!! they look at me the same way when I explain that I dont mind spending the $$ on fishy stuff..

My fish experience has gone from Oscar in a 29 gallon to Oscar in a 75 gallon with five other tanks in the house, a 125 gallon in the works for the bedroom and another 125 gallon for the living room.
7 years and counting. I started out by searching for broken or used equipment to fix and put another tank together. Since the beginning (BF/AF) I have gotten a little smarter and now work in a LFS that is by far the best in our area(great resource).
So not only do I hear the whole "you have a goldfish?" where is correct them and say, "foot long Oscar and she is more like family".
When I tell people my second job is in a fish store they say,"have you seen that show tanked?" and I say,"yes" and leave it at that.

"Ever feel odd about fish????"

No, not really. I don't consider them as "pets", I just see it as my hobby and lifestyle. Like the poster before has said "who cares what others think".

I come from a loong line of crazy fishkeepers lol...back in the day my no-emotion ex-navy uncle resucitated an oscar with an air hose. My late grandmother kept seahorses. My uncle loves cichlids, so guess thats where I get it from. I thought it was funny...I ordered discus and Hans sent babies for my kids. I asked my 6 yo son if he told his friends about his fish babies and he said no, I asked why- he sais "I didnt think they'd be interested." Lol I havent figured it out yet I talk about my fish all the time.

We have hobbyist conventions too. If you haven't been to any, you're missing out!
