You guys do realize that this bill won't ban ownership of these 9 species...right? Just transportation across state borders.

HR 669 is not just about transportation, for already established animals yes, for anything new....read the bill.

Do not be blinded by the smoke and mirror tricks of the legislative party, there is some serious mis information out there.

BTW I have keep Burmese and Iguana's both Green and Rhino, both are awesome animals however the price per animal should be hundreds rather than a handful of dollars.

I have since moved away from them in my collection, my Green died mostly because of me, he was nearly 20 yrs old. The Rhjino's were sold to a breeder in Arizona and I sold the Burmese to a gentlemen in Nebraska. She was only 2 yrs old and just over 10' and 55lbs, in my case it was children that moved her out of the home, she was very aggresive and my wife as supportive as she is drew a line.

I agree with others these larger reptiles should only be kept by advanced keepers due to the requirements.

My Iguana enclosure was 12' x 7' x 83" tall... this is the minimum at best for a full grown animal. Most people keep them in significantly smaller spaces...this is the problem, uneducated people keeping animals they know nothing about. I've meet people that believe raw meat and Dog food is an OK diet for Iguana's....that people is a problem. It's not the animal its the people keeping it.

Senate Bill S373 is specific to Constrictors not transportation. Couldn't pass HR 669 so they narrowed their focus, it was reported to the committee on 10 Dec 2009 and has yet to be voted on.

It's and ammendment to the Lacey act...

The gumberment really needs to focus on more important current events like unemployment, health care, the war in Iraq/afghanistan, etc..... This can definitely be brought up at a later date if you ask me.

Very true, but you are portraying the government as one entity whose processes are mutually exclusive.

I for one dont want to see any snake "banned" but the way the pet trade and lots of breeders are pumping out these large constrictors just to make a few bucks is killing the reptile trades image. Here is my post from the other thread.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

This is politicians pretending to do their job. This ridiculous law will do nothing and nobody will get in trouble for crossing state lines with a boa or python, how would anyone know?

With all that said, the pet hobby is to blame for this more than anyone. It is completely irresponsible and needless to breed big constrictors. There is no need to breed common Burms, Retics, Rocks, Anacondas, or even Red Tails. 99% of these animals go to people who have no idea what they are in for. It takes a lot of know how and even more space and money to keep a large constrictor. The average snake buyer has NO IDEA what they are getting into when they but these cute little babies. Properly cared for, a Retic or Burm will be 6+ feet after 2 years and too big and dangerous for the average person. In my area Zoo's and animal rescues are overwhelmed with the number of large snakes people are trying to unload. They wont even take them anymore. I can get half a dozen free large constrictors tomorrow if I wanted to. Until the pet trade and breeders stop the irresponsible breeding and sales practices of these animals, nothing will change. For christs sake, the Petco near me sells baby red tails and Albino Burms, I guarantee the type of buyer that would buy a snake at Petco has no idea what they are in for.

Breeders CAN NOT keep breeding these animals and selling them to just anyone, its IRRESPONSIBLE!!!!

just wanted to say thanks to everyone who voiced opinions so far on this topic weather it lines up to my thoughts or not. Thanks also for keeping it civil.

my brother used to have a red tail. great snake. unfortunatly a rat bit her spine and killed her. he only feeds frozen now. sad she was beautiful. But he had a 10' by 4' enclosure for her. i think she was around 8' when she died. it was around 6 years ago so i dont remember too much more about it.

anyways off that tangent. i havnt read too much about this ban. what all is banned? would my future caiman be banned?

They are looking to ban transportation across state borders for 9 species of large constrictors
