Fahaka Puffer, what should I know?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ thats fair enough, not every one wants to give up a decent sized tank for a fish to fly solo...

No luck in selling this guy, not anyone interested at all. Found an affordable 90g tank to house him for awhile. Looks like sand is the recommneded substrat, but what about decor? Sticky says for more of a bare tank. Thought these guys needed places to explore and hide? Also he has not touched the guppies in the tank, would a school of giant danios work in the 90g? They are cheap so if a couple get picked off it's no big deal. Also anyone keep plecos with fahaka?

I have a pleco with mine, although at times he does get nipped...

For deco, i personally went with lots of driftwood and anubias, with a fine sand substrate...

They come from the Nile River & love cover, NOT a bare tank. Here's my 125:

Yeah pufferpunk I saw your setup after I went back and read replies in the sticky. My seems to like to bite the stems of the anubias leaves so I had to remove or loose the plant. FH does yours bury itself in the sand, how necessary is sand? I notice PP has gravel.

My sand bed is not very deep, but she does at times attempt to bury herself, so i would guess with enough sand there is a chance they may use it to hide in...

My fahaka's substrate is 50% black sand & he's never buried in it, unless I scared him moving decor aorund.

Both of my previous two fahakas buried almost all of the time. Hed come out for a morning and evening swim, for lunch and dinner, and then find some shade and bury for a nap. They loved it. Each has there own personality, but I do recommend pool filter sand since its cheap and Im sure he will like it.

Moved the Fahaka(Bucky) to the 90g yesterday. Doesn't seem to happy, staying hidden for most of the time. I'll post more pics once he is out and about.

Well Bucky made an appearance tonight, snapped a couple pics before he went back into hiding. Been 3 days since he ate, gotta be getting hungry.
