x2 . . . . if I wanted to have a tank that looked like SW, I'd stock it with Africans, not SA/CA . . . from a pure appearance standpoint, I think Africans come way closer to looking "marine" than New World cichlids

yeah. It seems to me that SA/CA cichlids use sparkles to add to their beauty, while africans are vibrantly colored.

To me african cichlids (particulary mbuna) just seem a little tacky cos of how bright they are. Whilst your CA and SA cichlids dont have as much colouration and its more subtle but so much more beautiful cos its not screaming out at you and just sets them off perfectly.

yeah it seems like a tank of africans would be nicer to look at from a distance since theyre so vibrant, while SA/CA cichlids would be better to look at close up because of their intricate details.

personally I like african better because it seems like to me that usually people only like SA/CA better because they get bigger and can eat bigger things, to me that doesnt make a fish, i think SA/CA are very bland.

that is a good point, but to be fair, there are plenty of african cichlids that are big and eat bigger things, while not as brightly colored as some others

Exactly! Take a look at some of the larger haplochromis like Buccochromis, champsochromis, nimbochromis (especially livingstoni and linni) etc...

Not really a story but...

I much prefer latin over common names on communal live stock; as so much these days has silly names and things such as anabatoids often have multiple common names and then i look like an idiot in front of a customer when im not sure about the fish their talking about cos of all of the different names they have and im confused.

Although i do prefer common names as a rule :D

Another customer came in looking for something that would "eat other fish". When the health risks were explained to him he got pissed and walked out.

Another customer came in shortly after the first..

Him: D ya'll sell those fish....ummmm.....OTTERS!?
Me: Do we SELL Otters?
Him: Is that the name for them? Oh Wait....OSCARS!
Me: We have one large one..
Him: Oh I want like 5 or 6 of them, they like to school!
Me: For what size tank?
Him: 50 Gallons.
Me: That tank isn't even big enough for one adult Oscar man.
Him: WHAT?! I done it before! (Walks off)
