Anyway I was checking out the fish while my mom went to pay and suddenly I hear my sister cry out "There's a fish on the floor!" Apparently a Kenyi cichilid had jumped out of the noncovered tanks and was flopping around. She grabbed it and put it in the first cichilid tank she saw and we asked a staff member to put it where it belonged.
I still find it ridiculous that they don't cover their tanks. Had my sister not seen it it would have died.
Somewhat related... My dog Jack always came to work with me at the LFS, he kind of became the store mascot, his jobs involved entertaining unsupervised children, and eating the things that jumped.
Bear in mind we covered our tanks, but still there were gaps for electrical cords, airline, etc.. that many a determined fish located and escaped through. Jacks efficiency at his job mortified several customers. When everybody got bored and there was nobody in the store we'd drop a feeder crayfish in the concrete floor and watch Jack chase it around until he decided to eat it, very funny to watch. One customer walked in during one of of crayfish baiting sessions and insisted that she was going to call PETA and have the store shut down because we were "ritualistically abusing animals" she stormed out while I was explaining that the whole point of those crayfish being in stock was to provide live food for people who keep big puffers, and that puffers kill the crays way slower and more brutally than Jack ever did...
I still give Jack live crayfish from time to time, he loves it.
