Like a year ago I walked by my lfs and since I had nothing better to do I walked in to see what they had. Looked in the tanks and saw that they had some nice sewellia lineolata in one of them labeled and priced as gastromyzon punctulatus. I wanted some more s.lineolata for my river tank and this was a really good price since they cost twice as much as a g.punctulatus.
Looked for someone to help me and told her I wanted all the "gastromyzon" in that tank. She started out to fill the little plastic container and this guy walks up to us and starts talking to her about goldfish.
Guy: I need a goldfish. That one.
Girl: Sure, just let me do this first.
Guy: I'll be over here then...
After catching about 4 of the 9 that were in the tank the were getting harder to catch in the net and they were sticking to the glass pretty hard.
Girl: These catfish are really tough to catch...
Me: Yeah, I know. Have a bunch of them at home already. But they're not catfish at all. They are a distant relative to botias and other loaches and I pointed at some yoyo's in the tank next to her.
Girl: Wow. I did not know that and smiled at me.
Guy: No. That's not true. Clown loaches have no relatives. I read that in a book.
Me: Yes they do. There are many fish closely related to them, but clowns are the only fish in their genus.
Guy: No. You are wrong. I read it in a book. Clowns have no relatives at all. It said so.
Me: Then your book is a really bad one. Trust me. I've kept fish for well over 20 years and I do actually know what I'm talking about.
The guy looked a bit pissed at this time and he was hugging (yes, he was actually hugging) his briefcase.
Then he turned to the girl who was finishing up with the last fish and said: the water is really cloudy in my tank. Why?
Girl: What filter do you have?
Guy: A small one.
Girl: How big is your tank?
Guy: About 20 gallons.
Me: What do you keep in it?
Guy: 6 goldfish an 3 sailfin pleco.
Me: That's why it's cloudy. They are pigs. Both the goldfish and the pleco are real pigs and need good filters so the water stays clean. And they are far too big for your tank anyway.
Girl: But they only grow as big as the tank lets them.
Me: No they do not. The get really big. A goldfish will reach 10" fast and the pleco can grow up to 15-20". It's a myth that they only grow as large as the tank let them. They will continue to grow and there is nothing you can do about it.
Guy: No they cant. I have dwarf goldfish.
I just shook my head and walked over to the cash register to pay for my fish so I could get out of there.
At least I got some nice fish for half price
