Favorite LFS "CUSTOMER" STORIES ...

I went into an LFS on the edge of town on Thursday. I was on the hunt for a nice piece of driftwood, so I figured I'd stop in and take a look around.

Anyhow, after I found a nice piece of driftwood I grabbed a big bottle of Prime and some krill, I started looking around and saw a tank with a couple of 6" or so clown knives. The guy who ran the joint comes up and asks me I liked 'em. I told him yea, but I didn't have a big enough tank for one. When he asked me what size tank I had, I told him the biggest I had right now was a couple of 55s, he proceeded to tell me that I could easily house 2 of them in the tank for life. I asked him if he understood that the clown knife could approach 3 feet at full size, he laughed and told me he couldn't believe that I actually bought into "those kinds of wives tales" and that "no fish will get bigger than a foot or so in any aquarium".

Needles to say I put my things down and left quickly.

Yea, I talked to the guys at my favorite LFS later that day. I described the guy to them, and sadly enough, he is the owner.

Christ... I would have thrown a fit.

I figured not buying from him & telling every fishkeeper in my area what happened would be more affective than freaking out on the guy. Dude seemed like a creeper anyways...

the sad fact is that he probably believed what he was saying was true, and if he has been in the business for a long time, it would have been almost impossible to shake him from that belief :shakehead

wow i went into a new fish store today to check out the stock and pick up some fish food. I got into a conversation with a man who obviously thought i was a total idiot and a newb since im 15, and this 40 year old man tried flirting with me!! ewww!!!! :nilly:haha but anyways we were tlking about fish and the new species he got in yadda yadda i asked if they had any brackish puffers like figure 8s and he was like ooooh no those are pure fresh water. i was like noo and tried to explain to him they need brakish water and he kept on arguing that they were freshwater. then he tried to sell me a damsel saying he would do great with a puffer and tetras, but i had to make sure that i slowly aclimated him and to add the old water into my tank.:screwy: i asked him what fish he owned and he said rays, channel cats, aros, pbass, gar, and cichlids. We tlked and he showed me some brands of food, then...
me: what type of setups do you have?
him: they all live together in my huge tank, but there are sometimes fights but i put the fishy in time out.
me: ur tanks big? how many gallons?
him: well its a huge tank.............its 40 gallons. I keep my rays and gar in my 20 gallon and feed the gar gold fish!
:screwy:
me: wow thats a.....small tank for these fish?
him: o its ok they grow to the size of the tank:WHOA:
Me: (staring at him like hes insane)
him: hey i hav some peacock eels and oscars that i am selling, they will go great in a 10 gallon, we hav a 10 gallon on sale too!
:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

"Needles to say I put my things down and left quickly. " With aquarium stores being rare around here (unless one has a car and wants to drive a long way) (which I don't in either case)... if I had an arm load of drygoods I needed and actually had the attention of a clerk, I'd buy the things and leave.

I visited a PetCo one time (~45 minute city bus ride away). As I approached the fish area, I noted the tanks were sparkling clean. A clerk said she was responsible and was trying her best to learn how to do everything right. I complimented her -- good job! Then she asked if I needed any help. I said no, I'd just now come in and wanted to look around. She stepped back and let me at it. About 10 minutes later I had decided on some plants (I wouldn't buy fish and take them on a very long ride home, and didn't need any livestock anyhow). I looked around, but the clerk was nowhere to be found. I did catch a glimpse of her slipping out of and then back into an office way up front... Finally I gave up. If they didn't want my money on what was for me an impulse buy... well, they obviously didn't need it. I understand Petco is having a dollar per gallon sale starting on Jan 11. Should I impulsively get a ride and go get a new tank I have no room for? Decisions, decisons...
