filtration for 12x4x3

Two 2" bulk heads for drains in a 1077 gallon aquarium? THis tank needs a water flow rate of no less than 4300 gph, closer to 6000 gph would be better. Two 2" gravity drains trying to move over 2000 gph each is really pushing it. They may be able to keep up but it's doubtful. It's also going to be very loud, that much water will draw air/water thru the tubes making a loud sucking and bubbling sound.

As multiple other people have allready posted, you need a large sump and wet dry type filtration system. THe sump should be in 150 gallon to 200 gallon or greater range. You need about 35 cu. gal of media for biological filtration for 1077 gallons of water. If you can do more cu gallons of media, that would be to your advantage.

I use the dolphin pump rated at 3/4 or 1 hp depending on the feet head above the water pump for this size aquarium. It's a 2" in and 1 1/2 out plumbing.

YOu have mentioned about noise levels needing to be kept quiet, it's not going to happen. The pump is going to be loud, water flowing thru the overflow boxes will be loud, water crashing thru the filtration system will be loud, it's plain and simple goin to be a loud system. Typically when I build large aquarium systems like this it is built in a wall with all the filtration system in the room with the aquarium or we plumb the tank thru the floor and put the filter in the basement. YOu can deaden the sound with insulation but your going to have major heat and humitity problems inside the stand. The pump needs to be able to keep itself cool and it can't inside a sealed up, insulated cabinate stand not to mention the mold and mildew that most likley will happen.

THe idea of some outside filter, (canister, pond, etc) is not the best way. Perhaps a large bubblebead type filter or a large fluidized sand filter or just a plain old sand filter could work. THey are all going to need to be large to handle this size aquarium and again need a large water pump.

Not sure what else to tell you. I've done many big aquariums and can tell you first hand, the methods you are considering are going to be problemactic. Also it sound like you don't have a huge budget to play with so that compounds the problem. A cheap possibility would be to buy a used, non tempered 125, convert about 1/3 of it into a wet dry, drill a hole in the other end to plumb in your return water pump. A wet/dry -sump isn't much more than a box that holds water, it's pretty simple to build.

Now for the question on everyone's mind; How did you obtain this aquarium? Depending on where you live, this is $7,000.00 + aquarium, in some areas it's pushing $10,000.00. That's just for the tank, not all the rest of the equipment to go with it. I saw from posts else where on this sight that you live at home with your parrents, you've got a bed room large enough to house a 12x4x3 aquarium? How did you get it in there? You posted somewhere here today that your dad was taking you to the pet store today and you wanted to buy a knife but only had $4.00 to spend on one. I find it funny (odd) that a person in possesion of a several thousand dollar aquarium can only afford a $4.00 fish.

Like I posted earlier, lets see some pictures. I know you stated that you don't have a camera, isn't that your Jack Dempsy in your avatar? Not trying to be an ass but several things sound "fishy" (hahaha).

Get some picture on here. If you genuinly have this aquarium, pictures would really help with advise on options of what can be done. If you don't have one, borrow one. With some pictures you also can rub it in my face for questioning weather or not this aquarium exsists. :D

Lots of people say lots of things....

I had a 18'x4'x3' glass aquarium in my old building, a little ove 1600 gallons. It was very cool, but many people don't believe that I had it untill they either see the pictures of it of meet someone that had been to my shop. I built the stand and brought the sheets of glass in and built the tank on the stand. I like glass better than acrylic, acrylic scratches too easy.

I am building a 8'x4'x3' right now in my new building. I sold the 1600 gallon because I had nowhere to put it in my new shop. I kept the sump and filter though. Speaking of that, I have a few spare pumps that are big enough to run a 1077 gallon aquarium if your interested. SHipping would be a few bucks though, they are heavy.

I do believe you may need help with aquarium filtration. I'm just saying that there are some things that don't add up. I'm a skeptic I guess you could say. Seems odd that your dad bought a house with a huge aquarium but the previous owners took all the equipment.

What kind of knife you trying to buy. I'm thinking of getting a royal or a gold for myself.

just a reg clown my dad bought it cause he likes the house and plus he knows i like fish whys itwerid they took the equpiment i wouldent leave my sump at this house if imoved id take it with me so i could start a new tank id like a royal clown knife tho those are really nice but im gonna have to settle for a clown

It's Just odd to me. If I was buying a home and a part of the attraction was the aquarium, I would expect to be complete.

It really doesn't matter what I think, Just one persons opinion.

I've offered you my imput on what I would do with the information you have provided. If I can be of additional assistance, let me know.
