Finally! I got a Payara:)

[speechless]

um. I'm confused.

wait.......those are Hydrolycus Tarmatuias. The rarest of all Hyrdolycus. Possesing the sizing, eyes, and white edged traits of the Armatus with all other features belonging to the Tats.

Seriously......that is confusing. Is it possible for the tails to turn a "false" red from being hung? Or do you believe those are Tats?

One thing though - in regards to the light/dark - Woodysun's Armatus, the original badboy that got everyone interested, is pretty dark.

If I'm not mistaken I believe many of the 1st batch of Armatus that came in from Shark Aquarium are also dark.

All the pics I've seen from the batch that River Wonders brought in are light.

Either all the newbs will darken up with age OR it's a location thing.

Kinda like the Motoros......Columbians I believe it is are much lighter.

Or people.....LOL I'm sure my neck is a lot redder than say someone from England....LOL

Yep, could well be DB. Either due to location, like many species, or they darken with age. Which again, a lot of fish tend to do. Juvenile jardinis are usually pretty light for example, and really darken up at about a foot.

By the way all you Armatus/Tatu owners and experts, please chime into to my ID thread to help prospective buyers and people needing a quick ID etc :)

I got 100 bux on armatus. I see what dmack is talking about. Also that face screams armatus to me.

The fish at the Georgia Aquarium all died BTW. Its hard to get a 100% ID IMO from that vid. I do know that the georgia aquarium called IDed them as H. Armatus. From my researching on the internet I found a payara fishing site that claimed to have helped GA get and take care of the payara.

The KRSwop1 posted has always puzzled me. If they are indeed tats I MUST HAVE ONE AT THAT SIZE!!!

Ok here you go...hopefully these help. Honestly, two weeks ago I had no idea there were even different types of payara so this is all new to me. There def seems to be a white edging on his tail is that how you can tell the difference? The pictures are coming out with a red tint to them but in person he is more silver-ish. Quick question for yall...out of the original batch of 10 that I got (which came from a couple diff LFS's) some had a red dot on the tiny lil fin on their back near the tail and others had yellow or black. What's the difference?

Me and dmack were right...armatus.

The ones with the red dots were either armatus like this guy or red-tails. Im guess this was the only armatus out of the batch cause it quickly outgrew the others and red-tails do not grow that fast.

Nice pickup hopefully he'll live an be extremely nice to watch.

I'm still not 100% on Armatus....99.9%.....LOL

I think if it was smaller it would be easier to ID.... Honestly how many of us have seen 15in tats?
