Hey guys. Ive been interested in Geophagus for my 75 but just cant seem to pull the trigger due to the size of my tank. Ive always liked firemouths and would like to hear from people with experience keeping them in groups. Ive seen some info saying they can do well and others saying i can only do a pair. How many firemouths would you guys recommend and what ratio of m/f?

I too have fire-mouths. Never keep them as a single pair bcz the male Will Chase the female till death. The ratio should be one male to 3 females. They do their best in groups. However they tend to aggressive towards other cichlid species (personal experience). Better to keep them in a single species tank.

Thorichthys are at their best in groups.
6 to 8 for your tank.
Preferably 1 or 2 males and the rest female.
This may sound like a lot of_20160608_215033.JPG fish but only the males will reach maximum size.
Females will remain considerably smaller.
There are about 10 species of thorichthys available in the hobby.
Some do very well in cooler temps in the low 70s.
Only passionis and meeki do well above 76 for long.
I used to keep a group of helleri in a 4 foot tank.It worked just fine with a group of swordtails.

I was scared off of Geophagus because of their size and only having a 4' tank might not support them for their whole lives. I am very interested in either them or the Firemouths. What temp for each? Could I do the firemouths with Denison Barbs and do the temp at like 75 ish? I really like the Red Heads, just have been told they could be a problem. If I knew for certain they would work Id be all over them

Some geophagus will do quite well in a 75 gallon. Most species of Gymnogeophagus will be fine. Balzini are nice. Red head Tapajos geos would do well for a long time, Jurpari geos, etc. Geos are slow growers so they will do well in a 75 gallon for a long time.

The juruparis really caught my eye. Ive considered all of the ones you have listed. Out of Balzani, Red Heads, Jurupari, and Firemouths, which would you guys recommend and how many? There would be dithers like Lemon Tetra up top.

Ps: I know firemouths arent geos, just listed them together lol.

I really like my Firemouths (meeki type). Unfortunately, I think I got a group of 6 males when I bought them as juveniles. Now I have 2. They are very showy and active. They also sift around my sand substrate quite often. I am often surprised at how much personality these little guys have. If you are interested, I say get some. You won't be disappointed.

In my opinion, you could have 1 or 2 Jurapari. 3 to 4 balazini 1 or 2 red head geos and a small trio or 4 firemouths. You would just have to be persistent on water changes.

Will Juruparis do well in that small of a group? I know most geos prefer larger groups, but im wondering if they are different for some reason. I know the Tapajos are recommend to be at 4-5, but i know i cant support that long term
