Firemouth Stocking 75 gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great thread! I've been considering Firemouths also. Do just the males have bright colors?
From what Ive read I think the males do have more color than females, but this may be just around breeding time. Dont quote me on that

I have always been particularly interested in a Thorichthys based tank myself. Some of stanzzzz7 tanks are really beautiful.

I just did a little searching and your right the Aureus are pretty spectacular!

I have seen them as well and think I prefer the Aureus. Would the same rules apply for these guys? I think they might like a little cooler water but there isnt much info

I did find a reference that states they prefer 75 to 82.
Native to Guatemala
Ph 7 to 7.7
Just very basic care guide not much detail given

A lot of info on thorichthys temperature requirements are a little out dated.
Thorichthys are split into two groupings the helleri group containing species like aureaus, callolepis, helleri and socolofi
And the meeki group consisting of passionis and meeki.

The helleri group do best between 70 and 76. With a high oxygen content.
Meeki and pasionis any where from 70 to 80.
The meeki group tend to be a little hardier than the helleri group and less prone to bloat.
Thorichthys from the helleri group tend to be short lived in higher temps.

I think Im gonna roll with 6 Firemouths. 2 male 4 female. Then a school up top, possibly the Denison Barbs, and then a cool pleco to top it off. Lots of driftwood work with some amazon swords. Probably will keep the tank at 72, or is that a little too cold for the Firemouths? It really depends on what school I do for the temp
