  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Trust me, if it's between red heads and firemouths, go with the red heads, they are so much more fun to watch.

This is not a fact, just a matter of opinion.
One that I would disagree with, yet neither of us would be right. We all see qualities in different things.

With 6 Firemouths/6 Geos, would you recommend 15 ish Lemon Tetras up top and a few catfish at the bottom? Or maybe a pleco?

just cant seem to sell myself on that many 6" fish, whether it be firemouth or red heads
I said you only want a couple of males and the rest female.Only males will reach 6 inches, females remain much smaller.

I had 6 firemouths in a 7x2 x2 it was like a war zone. I added another 14 and had a very peaceful tank.
Thorichthys live in group's in the wild and adapt well to living like this in aquariums.
I hate crowded tanks in most cases.
Some fish however, thrive in groups.Mbuna spring to mind as do many other African species.
Thorichthys are at their most relaxed and show fascinating behavior in groups.
You won't be over crowded with a couple of males and 5 or 6 females.

And would this be the only stock? Or would i add dithers as well? Any recommendations?

I would try slightly bigger tetras than lemons. They may be preyed upon as the cichlids grow.

I'm quite restricted in my tastes for dithers, especially with central American cichlids.I like to try to put fish together that can be found in the same waters in nature. If I chose the fire mouths I would use xiphophorus helleri (swordtails) or poecilla species like the yucatun mollies.

Xiphophorus helleri. This is a variant from the rio otapa.

If you don't mind mixing species from different continents, most peaceful shoaling fish, too large to be eaten would work.Rainbows, larger danios or Buenos Aires tetra to name a few.

Awesome, thank you! Ill be decided between 3 stock plans

8 Denison Barbs
3 Electric Blue Acara
4 Bolivian Rams
10 Cory Catfish
(i understand EBA like warmer waters, and will meet in middle with temp at 75. Ive read they can do well in this.)

6 Red Head Tapajos
15 Schoolers
Pleco/Catfish

6 Firemouth
15 Schoolers
Pleco/Catfish

Great thread! I've been considering Firemouths also. Do just the males have bright colors?

I would just like to say the fact that you are making a plan to only get fish that are appropriate for the size tank you're using is commendable.
So many threads on here were people try to put the largest fish they can into a small tank.
Whatever you choose I wish you luck with them.
