Firemouth Stocking 75 gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on what species some of the others are like the pleco some of the fancy plecos come from rather warm water conditions. If you could up that to somewhere around 76 to 78 I think you would be good.

Ill worry about the pleco when the time comes. Just wondering if 6 firemouth will be the magic number or if ill need to do more

I would start with at least 10 maybe 12 and grow them on together.
12 would be good for about 2 years. At this age they will start spawning and you can re home any surplus fish to give you the ratios you need.

There are lots of catfish that would work in your tank.
Rhamdia quelen is biotope correct.
Just remember if you ever want to breed your meeki, most catfish will eat the eggs at night.

Are there any fish for the middle to top region that are indigenous, excluding sword tails? You have me intrigued in the biotope setup. Am I correct that the Bristlenose Pleco can be found with Meekis?

The common ancistrus in the hobby comes from the Amazon, the parana basin I believe.

Biotope correct fish for firemouths are not always easy to find unless you look at livebearers.
Tetras like astyanax mexicana can be found with them as can the pike top livebearer. The pike top is an interesting fish but can be difficult to feed, preferring live foods.
Catfish are rhamdia species but may get too big for your tank.
There are also sturisoma species in central America.

I was never drawn to livebearers like swordtails or mollies.
When I first became interested in central American biotopes, all the livebearer fish i had seen were the brightly coloured line bred fish found at your local fish store.
They had no appeal to me at all.
Then I started to look at the true wild strains. These are a different fish altogether.
They are hardier for a start.
They also have more subtle beauty than the horrible bright orange one I had previously seen.
I took the plunge mainly because they were the only geographical correct choice available to me.
I was soon very surprised to be enjoying them as much as the cichlids they were accompanying.
I would not rule them out, just seek some wild types. They can be very interesting fish to keep.
