I recently had a friend do this same thing. I went over to her house and she's like, "Come look at my new fish!"
Over on her kitchen counter is a little feeder goldfish in a small vase with bamboo. Not only that, but she put it in RO water instead of buying dechlor remover. Poor thing just gasping at the surface. I tried to educate her, but the poor little guy still didn't make it. Oui vey.
oui vey? as any jew (myself included) will tell you, its spelled OY. Where do you think you are? France?
Of course, keeping fish in small tanks and bowls is cruel. It believe that in rome you can get something like a fine and up to *1 month!* in jail for keeping goldfish in a bowl. I have run into the bad habit of seeing goldfish or other fish in bad containers and running out to set up a proper tank for them. SIGH
Sweet, I'm a fish jew too, but I don't speak hebrew or yiddish. I am also Irish, German, Bohemian, and Wurmian. If WWWIII hits, I may have to send myself to Concentration Camp.
My betta is in a 2.5 gallon tank and i still feel pangs of guilt every once in awhile about it being too small. I always read that they are not very active fish, but my fish swims around all of the time.
I agree with this, at least if your going to put a fish into a fish bowl, drop an airstone in with them so they dont die, and I only ever use a fish bowl when im cleaning out the little tanks that i have.
Bettas like to move, You know if you have a healthy betta by the behaviour. Bettas get real sick real quick and real easy, and one of the signs of a sick betta is not being active, a normal betta will swim around all puffed out like hes king of the world and when sick will just mope around either just under the surface or will "lay" on the plants or what ever you have in the tank with him if anything. Personally i keep my bettas in a five gallon thick with plants and a filter.
Fishbowls suck, I don't even like to keep bettas that way anymore, it's a shame people keep big fish like goldfish in bowls and that business encourages it by putting pictures of this on the label and even calling them "goldfish bowls"
